Welcome

Described by The New York Times as a “social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway,” Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential, prolific, shape-shifting presence in twenty-first-century music. NEWS: Khan / Iyer / Mitta EP: Sanctuary

In December, together with sarode player Alam Khan (son of the late Ali Akbar Khan) and Nitin Mitta on tabla, Iyer released a collaborative a EP titled Sanctuary.

According to San Francisco Classical Voice, “Although it is common to hear a sarod and tabla together, the addition of the piano… gives the music a stunning ethereal dimension.”

An improvisational dialogue between piano, sarod, and tabla. This project began with a long-standing friendship and creative curiosity between Vijay Iyer and Alam Khan, both of whom had worked independently with tabla player Nitin Mitta. When the three gathered in California for a two-day session, it unfolded as an unplanned yet deeply connected musical conversation. Born of spontaneity and mutual respect, this collaboration lives in the moment. Drawing from their shared fluency in improvisation, the trio recorded a series of intimate, exploratory pieces that became the Sanctuary EP. These recordings reflect the spirit of listening and discovery that guided their first encounter.

NEWS: Live shows in New York, London, Porto, Lisbon

In November Iyer’s quartet with drummer Tyshawn Sorey, bassist Yunior Terry, and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill played a sold-out twelve-set run at the Village Vanguard in New York.

Iyer also performed a special concert in New York with celebrated composer-saxophonist Henry Threadgill and composer-drummer Dafnis Prieto.

2026 began with a solo tour to London, Porto and Lisbon before returning to New York to perform at Lincoln Center alongside an all-star cast of musicians, poets and orators within Carrie Mae Weems’s Contested Sites of Memory.

“Vijay Iyer’s solo piano performance…at Cafe Oto was one of the most moving and powerful performances heard at this intimate venue.”

NEWS: Fieldwork release: Thereupon

Thereupon is the long-anticipated return of the all-star collaborative trio Fieldwork, which has been described by NPR as a “power trio for the new century.” This long-standing collective comprises three internationally revered innovators of contemporary music: alto saxophonist-composer Steve Lehman, pianist-composer Vijay Iyer, and drummer-composer Tyshawn Sorey. In the seventeen years since their last recording, Door (Pi), all three musicians have climbed to the pinnacle of the creative music scene and received universal acclaim for their work, each one significantly reshaping the language of creative music in his own way. Remarkably, as Fieldwork, the whole is even greater than the sum of its parts, as the group continues to redefine the possibilities for ensemble music-making.

Boston Globe 20 Best Albums of the Year
(So Far)
“Player-composers Vijay Iyer, 53, and Wadada Leo Smith, 83, continue their decade-long musical conversation with this sublimely beautiful meditation on their “ongoing sorrow and outrage of the past year,” Iyer writes, but with “faith in human possibility.” If the album begins in darkness, the intertwining lyrical exchanges of keyboards, trumpet, and subtle electronics ultimately bring light.”
