I've got to design a game for my games programming course, and I've got a lot of ideas - we can base it on existing IP so I was thinking of improving some of the Battletech games to make them feel like part of the universe, rather than just a FPS or RTS with Mechs.
I'd like to know what makes a good game charachter, and wether people prefer to 'BE' the character themselves and direct the game, or wether it's better for the game to tell you what the character is thinking and what they want to do, and make you do it.
A lot of games these days go for the later, and feel like movies where you get to do the shooting bits but not control the direction. I personally don't like it that way, but I hear my tastes are strange, so what do you guys think?
