Tim Chester and Christopher de la Hoyde. Who on earth is the Holy Spirit.  Purcellville, VA: The Good Book Company, June 1, 2013.  80 pp.

4 out of 5

Purchase: Amazon

I am always in the back of my mind wondering about what good books on the Holy Spirit are out there both to read for my own edification and also to recommend others.  This would be a concise work that I can recommend others especially the Christian general reader.  It covers the Person of the Holy Spirit and what does the Holy Spirit do.  I read this book because I have benefited from other books in this series before (Questions Christians Ask) and secondly the author Tim Chester was someone familiar (I read other works by him in the past and it was helpful) though Christopher de la Hoyde is new to me.  My expectations were met when I read this work. Thomas Brooks. Consolations from Christ’s Imputed Righteousness.  Pensacola, FL: Chapel Library, July 6, 2015. 28 pp.

5 out of 5

Free: Chapel Library

Want to read something that allows you to meditate on the biblical truth of Christ’s imputed righteousness?  This is a great spiritual read for the Christian to fuel one’s greater spiritual appreciation and heart-felt affections for Christ’s sacrificial death that gives believers Christ’s imputed righteousness.  It is written by Thomas Brooks a Puritan preacher and English writer who lived from 1608 to 1680.  Though it is hundreds of years old, the truth is timely and relevant as ever.  I am glad that Chapel Library published this work for modern readers today.

messianic_psalm

I think Christians should value how Messianic prophecies pointing to Jesus contribute to apologetics and also for Christian’s confidence in the Scripture and the Gospel.

I need to study more on Psalm 89 which is about the Davidic Covenant and how it is Messianic prophecy.

But for now I want to share this and also as a record for myself later, similar to how I wrote the post Aramaic Targum insight with interpreting Psalm 80 Messianically.

Thomas Brooks. Remedies for Division among God’s People.  Pensacola, FL: Chapel Library, May 23, 2016. 20 pp.

If we understand the Bible’s teaching on sins, we Christians would realize all of us have the bomb inside of us to cause disunity in the church.  That fact should make us beware of ourselves in how we relate to other Christians in the church so as not to cause division.  I realize a lot of this has to be preventative ahead of time.  So what resource can one have to promote unity and even to work in one’s heart with the danger of division among God’s people?  This work by Thomas Brooks published by Chapel Library is helpful and I would even say powerful.  I was immensely edified reading this.

For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Who was Athaliah’s father?

Here are the answers which the skeptic believes indicate a Bible contradiction:

Omni

Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah the granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.” (2 Kings 8:26)

Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned for one year in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri.” (2 Chronicles 22:2)

Ahab

He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” (2 Kings 8:18)

He walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for Ahab’s daughter was his wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.” (2 Chronicles 21:6)

(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)

George Whitefield.  The Lord Our Righteousness.  Seattle, WA: Amazon Digital Services LLC, December 7, 2019. 20 pp.

I have enjoyed reading a couple of George Whitefield’s sermons and that has lead me to read this one.  I want to read works by Whitefield to see what was the contents of his preaching and teaching that God used to bring about so much revival and salvation of sinners.  I did enjoy this work.

The booklet is based upon Jeremiah 23:6.  Whitefield zooms in on the last part of the verse where it says “The Lord of Righteousness” and from that he takes head on the belief of works righteousness and defends the doctrine of imputation.  He begins with an introduction then move to consider who is the Lord in “The Lord of Righteousness” where he argues persuasively from the context of Jeremiah 23 that this is talking about the Messiah and therefore is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself!  From this he address the question “How is He Man’s Righteousness?” and then addressed some objections before moving on to the next section on “Some Ill Consequences of Rejecting This Truth.”  The Conclusion and Application then follows.

Some of the objections Whitefield answered against Imputation include the objection that the doctrine destroys the Christian desire for good works, that Christ never preached the doctrine of Imputation and the view that Christ never taught the doctrine.  I think Whitefield handled it well.  I really like the section on “Some Ill Consequences of Rejecting This Truth.”  Here Whitefield shows the unwanted result of denying the doctrine of imputation.  It was well done!  The application portion was very good, he addressed different members of his listening audience including the final one to African slaves; wow this really shows the time and how he loved his audience that he ministers to them!  I recommend it !

I love the writings of the author Arthur W. Pink.  Here in this booklet Pink addresses the topic of the Bible and joy. Christian joy from the Scriptures is an important topic in an age where there’s so much quick internet distractions.  True joy is found in God and Christ and that is mediated through the Scriptures!

Want to read something short on the sufficiency of Scripture?  This work is published by Chapel Library and is written by Geoffrey Thomas, a preacher from Wales and associate editor of The Banner of Truth.  I see from the bio on the back of this booklet that he has authored many Christian books but this is the first time I have read something from this author.  It was however edifying and it inclines me to read other works by him.
