Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Hey flist,

I bet you guys thought I was dead. I'm not. Life's been pretty crazy for the past couple of years (in a good way: new city, new job, new language learned). I'm still trying to be fannish but it's basically a losing battle. However, if you are reading this please let me know how you are doing. I think about everyone on my flist and often wonder what you guys are up to.

About what I am up to Right Now: I am online today not to beguile you with stories about myself. I actually have an opportunity to speak to college students about the LGBT and Feminist movement in the 1950's through 1970's (essentially during and after the Civil Rights movement) in a little over a week and need help. Lots of help.

I am hoping that people on LJ can recommend and link me online resources that I can use to help me with my presentation. What I am hoping for:

Youtube clips of shows, movies, news broadcasts, or anything media oriented that would help illustrate how things were like back then for lesbians, gays, bi's, transsexuals and women. I think visual aids, when used correctly, can really make a positive impact and help people remember things. Especially as these are college kids and probably have the attention span of goldfish.

Book recommendations are welcome but since the presentation is less than 2 weeks away and I will have to order online and wait a week, I might not be able to use it. I would also like to talk/interview people who are willing to speak about their experiences during that time and/or their impressions of the public mood/mentality of those decades regarding those issues.

I hope to make the focus of my presentation evenly balanced between the LGBT and Feminist movement so don't forget about the role of women (straight or otherwise) in this era!

Why I'm reaching out to LJ: I'm trying to be as prepared as possible because I'm living in a community that is conservative and religious so I am hoping to kickstart a debate among my audience members and want to make sure I can answer almost any question coming my way. The worst thing would be to not have an answer or say something wrong and lose all credibility with the audience.

Please feel free to forward this request on to others. If you want to paste or link my entry on your own LJ that would be awesome. I'd rather have more recommendations than I can handle than less.

Cheers,
V

I'm cleaning out some stuff and came across my large collection of burned dvds. I realize that there might be a chance that I can find it a good home instead of throwing it away so here's my lame pitch.

A. Here's a very brief description of what it contains:

~150-200 burned discs (mostly dvds, some cds) -- split between two handsome black storage boxes

One box is anime & J-drama -- some yaoi, some lemony goodness, lost of popular stuff like Prince of Tennis, Bleach, Tactic, Hikaru no Go, Mirage of Blaze, etc.

Other box is tv & movies -- again, mostly popular stuff like Dexter, House, BSG, etc., but there are some rarer US/British stuff too like Poldark and Cupid. Also there are some musical soundtracks too.

So this collection is great for those that would like to get a large sampling of stuff that they might not have tracked down and downloaded themselves. Again, this collection easily has 150-200 dvds so there are lots and lots of shows/movies that I haven't listed.

B. Disclaimers:

1) Ideally, I'm looking for someone who is willing to take the whole collection off my hands, but I'll also be willing to split the two boxes if two different people come forward. I will not consider letting people just choose what they want out of the collection -- honestly, I just don't have the time for that.

1.5) Also, I may not have time to respond to comments with questions like "does it have ____ or ____?" You can certainly respond in comments, but I may not get back to you with an answer. I haven't looked at my collection for over a year and don't really remember what I have. I just know I have a lot of it.

2) Which leads me to point 2 -- the collection DOES NOT include the most recent stuff. Since DVR and Hulu and such, I find that I don't really need to burn episodes anymore so this collection is really for people who are looking to either try new stuff or got into a show mid-stream and want to catch up on some older eps.

3) I'm only keeping the collection until the first week of September -- let's say the 8th at the latest. So please let me know ASAP if you live in NYC and want to come by and take a look. I think the collection is definitely worth saving, but will have no trouble tossing it if no one wants it.

C. Plea for help:

Please feel free to pass this post on to your flist! I live in NYC but will be willing to spend the money to ship the collection via media mail to anyone outside NYC who wants it. I just think junking it is a waste and want to at least try to keep it out of a landfill.

It's been 46 weeks since I've posted...WOW.

The basic news is that I'm still alive, but rarely on lj anymore so am letting everyone know who still has me friended that I'm declaring a Defriending Amnesty Day for my lj: feel free to defriend my lj and there will be no hard feelings.

I will also be doing some defriending on my end too. Nothing personal, it's just time to trim down my reading list to those journals/communities that reflect my current interests and eliminate the need for filters.

Why flock a lj that hasn't been posted in for 46 weeks?

Well, I've come to the realization that part of my reason for staying away from my own lj is that I'm just not that comfortable with a public journal. Call it a generational thing or paranoia, but the thought of having content out there for anyone to see has begun to really skeeve me out. So this is probably going to be my last public post and everything from here on out will be flocked. I will also be going back and flocking all my previous entries. Not because they contain anything juice or super-secret, but just to keep everything consistent.

Ultimately, I'm hoping that these changes will make me a more active participant on lj and my flist.
