What is Vashon Makerspace?

Several island organizations and businesses have supported building a makerspace for Vashon. These include the Vashon Tool Library, the King County – Vashon Library, the Vashon School District, and a large group of volunteers. The Makerspace Advisory Group was formed to work out the details of how a makerspace might be organized, including what tools and resources would be included, where it would be located, how membership might work, and a host of other issues. Woodworking, metalworking, and other tools continue to be collected and are awaiting an appropriate space to be installed. We are happy to report that the woodworking studio has opened for use in March 2026!

WHAT IS A MAKERSPACE?

A place in which people with shared interests can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. A makerspace may contain all kinds of tools, from electronics and computers to shop tools, and provides a workspace for individuals and groups in the community to come together, learn and build. Makerspaces exist all around the Puget Sound area and across the nation.

Our Vashon Makerspace – Phase One

Constructed by a team of volunteers, and repurposing a substantial quantity of donated materials, this 600 sq. convertible workspace has hosted classes in hand woodworking, spoon carving, router techniques, and sewing /clothing repair. Our long-term goal is to expand from this modest start to a facility with multiple dedicated craft studios of 500 to 2500 square feet each.

Short-term woodworking classes of 1 – 3 sessions in length will be offered through the MakerSpace. More in depth multi-session classes will continue to be offered through the Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) at the Vashon HS Woodshop, in cooperation with the Vashon School District and Vashon Park Department.
