In 2021, VHT completed its second large hydrogen project in collaboration with Linde, pioneering high capacity refueling for hydrogen-powered trains. When Canadian sawmill equipment suppliers AMS wanted to cut power peaks in newly upgraded sawmills, they contacted long-time partner Van Halteren Technologies. Hannover University is known for being able to offer the very best in coastal research, and one part of its facility is the large wave flume which contains a hydraulic wave generation system. The university wanted to be able to improve the quality of its waves and the efficiency of its facility, and asked Van Halteren Technology to engineer a new wave generation system based entirely on electric technology.

About 30 years ago Van Halteren Technologies installed a wave generation system for a facility operated by the Indonesian government. The technology allowed for research to be done in either the shallow or the deep part of the basin. VHT was asked to upgrade and revitalize the technology, and came back with a solution that allowed both parts of the basin to be used at the same time.

SBM uses special vessels to position valuable and sensitive equipment on the seabed at depths down to 3,000 meters. The use of a 150 ton active heave compensation system from VHT enables SBM to carry out this work in a most reliable, efficient and safe manner.

Allseas, the world-renowned contractor in offshore construction and heavy lifting, had previously worked with VHT on other vessels. This led to the decision to ask for a hydraulic lifting system that met the most important requirement – to do a single lift of 48,000 tonnes in just twenty seconds. For VHT, this meant designing and engineering a solution like nothing seen before.

The “Westlandgracht” lock is located between the Westlandgracht and the Slotervaart in the city center of Amsterdam. The lock has a difference in water level between the east and the west of 1.70 meters. The lock in the Westlandgracht was originally operated manually, but will be remote controlled by the end of 2023. VHT has delivered 8 pieces of Electro Mechanical Actuators (EMA’s), for the movement of the miter gate doors as well as for the valves.

The moveable “Weespertrekvaart bridge” connects the Weespertrekvaart area with Watergraafsmeer. This bicycle and pedestrian bridge improves the connection with the rest of the city. Realization of the project is planned for the end of 2023.

Smith Canal is a slough that runs along the south side of Smith Tract in Stockton. The slough connects to the Stockton Deepwater Channel just east of the Stockton Port (Rough and Ready Island). Because of the flood.

Since 2010, both locks are operated remotely. From that time, hydraulic cylinders were actuating the mitre gates and valves. In 2021, the hydraulic drives of the doors and slides of both locks are replaced by sixteen Electro Mechanical Actuators (EMA’s) from VHT to Hollandia and used by the city of Amsterdam.

In 2020/2021 the “Zeedoksluis” at the port of Den Helder lock is renewed. It was the first thorough renovation since its construction in 1974. The moving parts of the lock gates are replaced, and the lock is fitted with a new electrical, operating and control system.

Ship lock complex Eefde, also known as ‘the gate of Twente’, sees more than 60 million tons of cargo pass through it every year, as vessels transport cargo between the major ports of Europe. As the number of ships increased, waiting times started to rise, so the decision was made to build a second lock. To ensure efficient operation, ship lock Eefde needed an energy efficient, reliable actuator system to effectively control the water gates. Hollandia, the contractor, looked to VHT for engineering expertise.

Renault is looking to develop new autonomous driving solutions, and has invested in a new simulation system in order to test them effectively.

The Ems barrage in Germany has already provided reliable protection against storm surges for 16 times since it was commissioned. VHT’s latest achievement involves overhauling the hydraulic cylinders at the Ems barrage for coastal protection. The cylinders are almost 13 meters long, each weighing over 20 tons.

Saltwater can be a major problem for farms as it limits the amount of land that can be used to grow crops and cannot be used for any kind of irrigation. For some farms in Vietnam, this isa serious issue, especially for those between the Cái Bé and Cái Ló’n rivers. Rice farms in this area have been struggling with the ingress of seawater for a long time, so the Vietnamese government decided to build a barrier system to control flows. They chose VHT to provide the many hydraulic cylinders required.

Storm surge barriers play a vital role in protecting the coast of the Netherlands from flooding. Hartelkering is part of the barrier of Europoort which closes the Hartelkanaal in the event of high tides and flooding, and VHT engineered the drive and control system which opens and closes the gates. These systems are essential, and because they are exposed to the elements, they need to be serviced and inspected regularly to ensure continued reliability.
