Turning ambition into scalable decarbonization
The Market-Based Instruments (MBI) Program helps companies integrate MBIs into their Scope 3 strategies through expert-led sessions, case studies, and collective learning.
Many impactful value chain interventions cannot currently be included in corporate GHG inventories due to physical traceability requirements. As guidance from the GHG Protocol and SBTi continues to evolve, companies face growing uncertainty around how to act credibly today while preparing for future standards.
The program begins with the Food & Agriculture cohort and expands to sectors such as Apparel & Footwear, Manufacturing & Chemicals, and Transport & Logistics, with each sector contributing insights that inform shared, cross-sector guidance.
Participants will:
- Explore how MBIs operate across direct and indirect mitigation pathways
- Define principles for credibility and quality
- Align with evolving SBTi and GHG Protocol guidance
Together, we turn ambition into scalable business models for decarbonization.
Why it matters
Scope 3 emissions account for the majority of corporate carbon footprints, yet remain the most challenging to manage due to fragmented value chains, limited traceability, and evolving reporting requirements.
At the same time, emerging frameworks and initiatives — including the SBTi, GHG Protocol, TCAT, AIM QAR, and AMI — are actively reconsidering how Market-Based Instruments may be recognized and reported.
By joining the MBI Program, companies can contribute real-world insights to inform emerging guidance while building internal clarity on MBI risks, opportunities, and boundaries.
Contribute a case study
Case studies are a core component of the MBI Program, enabling participants to explore how Market-Based Instruments function in real-world value chains.
Working closely with the Value Change Initiative experts, each case generates:
- A confidential report with tailored technical insights and recommendations
- A public factsheet, approved by the case owner, sharing learnings with the wider community
Cases are assessed through three lenses:
- Governance & Data — how information is tracked and managed
- Design — alignment with current and emerging frameworks
- Impact — operational, financial, and climate outcomes
Why join the MBI Program
The MBI Program is a 24-month, expert-led initiative for organizations seeking to engage actively in shaping the future of Scope 3 decarbonization.
Participants gain early insight into evolving interpretations of Market-Based Instruments under global frameworks, a credible forum to test approaches before standards are finalized, and the opportunity to contribute evidence that informs shared understanding across sectors.
