Overview

We offer K-12 educators and students 4 dynamic points of engagement with the museum—Field Trips, Art Truck School Visits, Classroom Visits, and Virtual Classrooms Visits. K-12 programs are offered free of charge and partly supported by the Professional Outreach Program in the Schools (POPS), managed by the Utah State Board of Education and sponsored by the Utah State Legislature. All experiences are curated for the grade and rooted in Core Standards.

Field Trips

Tours for K-12 students that provide an introduction to contemporary art and dynamic conversations in the gallery. Tours are led by a professional educator, encourage curiosity, and designed to connect with a broad array of core curricular subjects. Elementary and Middle/Junior high field trips are a guided tour only with high schools having the option to roam freely after their guided tour. 30-minute hands-on art projects can be added on.

Art Truck School Visit

The Art Truck brings exciting and accessible contemporary art, created by leading local and national artists, directly to schools and community venues across the state free of charge. Each visit includes the expertise of a trained museum art educator who leads students through a meaningful exploration of the exhibition. Teachers are provided with structured lesson plans to supplement their tour and incorporate the Art Truck more deeply into their curriculum.

Classroom Visit with Art of Our Time

In-class visits provide an introduction to a contemporary artist and make art inspired by their work. We can visit up to six classes in one day and schools must be located less than 60 minutes away from UMOCA(20 S West Temple). Visits are free, 45-minutes long, and our trained educator will provide all the materials and clean-up.

Virtual Classroom Visit with Art of Our Time

Virtual in-class visits provide an introduction to a contemporary artist and make art inspired by their work. Our Educator will zoom into your classroom. We can visit up to six classes in on day. Visits are free, 45-minutes long, and our trained educator will provide a material list of commonly found classroom supplies before the visit.

Art Truck

The Art Truck brings exciting and accessible contemporary art, created by leading local and national artists, directly to schools and community venues across the state free of charge. Experience the transformative power of art with this year’s Art Truck exhibition, Kelly Brooks: Movement Archives in our BRAND NEW vehicle(Heating+ Air Conditioning!). Local artist and educator, Kelly Brooks, creates playful drawings and video based on the nearly constant movements of her nine-month-old.

In this unique exploration of art, students are encouraged to see creative ways of making art, tracing motion, and drawing while covering multiple core standards. Best of all, this mobile exhibition comes to your school, absolutely FREE!

Each visit includes the expertise of a trained museum art educator who leads students through a meaningful exploration of the exhibition. Teachers are provided with structured lesson plans to supplement their tour and incorporate the Art Truck more deeply into their curriculum.

The Art Truck will be driven to your school and will be available for 30-min tours/hands-on art projects for the entire school day for grades K-12th. Only 25 students can be accommodated at one time. Classes larger than this will need to be divided in half. A minimum of 100 participants is required for a visit. UMOCA gives priority to title I schools and locations the Art Truck has NOT visited the previous school year.
