1.
She isn't clingy and, frankly, Xena expected the girl to be.
She expected Gabrielle's arms to be all around her that night, the first night they kissed and allowed kissing to turn into more than kissing. She expected to find her own body near to numbness in the morning, with Gabrielle covering her like a blanket.
But the girl is a foot or so away, hiding from the approaching dawn under furs.
And Xena isn't sure if she likes the distance.
But for every night after that, it is the same. Gabrielle is not close as the dawn comes, she is in her own space and it has nothing to do with Xena.
And Xena isn't sure if she likes this distance, but she won't ask Gabrielle to change.
---
2.
She isn't the passive type and, honestly, Xena thought the girl would be.
She thought Gabrielle would fall back, all virginal and timid, all blush and no bite.
But as Xena came closer, Gabrielle tugged the woman down.
Gabrielle took no time in unbuckling and in stripping off that peasant skirt.
Gabrielle tangled her ink-stained hands in Xena's hair and claimed the warrior.
Xena was the one falling back, falling into release like a teenage boy.
And Xena isn't sure she knows Gabrielle at all, not really.
She didn't recognize this wildness in the girl. She didn't see it until Gabrielle is on top of her, sweaty and straining.
And Xena isn't sure she knows Gabrielle, but she won't let on.
---
3.
She isn't all sunshine and, truly, Xena believed the girl to be just that.
But with the morning, before breakfast and before trekking down the trails, Gabrielle is a terror. She demands. She insults. She fixes you with a death-glare and Xena just keeps her eyes to the woods.
It's safer that way.
And Xena didn't think Gabrielle would be this way, all black clouds and annoyance.
She pictured the girl all smiles and all joy - all the time.
But not in the morning, with the flinging of bedrolls and the grumbling at the fire.
Oh, Gabrielle comes back all light and airy after a meal, after a bath - but Xena knows better now... she knows to not trust this girl once the sun hits her eyes.
---
4.
She isn't perfect and Xena thought she was, she really did.
She saw Gabrielle in some kind of golden hue, pure and innocent and incapable of any wrong-doing. Gabrielle was the beacon in Xena's mind, when the warrior had nothing else to give... the thought of Gabrielle, good and perfect Gabrielle, kept her going.
But Xena stands on this cold mountain, snow and ice inside of her body as well as upon the ground, and she knows Gabrielle is far from perfect.
Gabrielle is far from good, far from pure, far from innocent.
Gabrielle isn't perfect at all and Xena is shattered by this revelation.
---
5.
She isn't the world, but so much more, more than Xena ever thought possible.
Every time Xena thought she had the girl figured out, the girl surprised her.
The girl surprised her by following in a wasted warrior's footsteps.
The girl surprised her by forgiving and accepting.
The girl surprised her by growing up and still not becoming too hard.
The woman... for that is who Gabrielle is now... the woman surprised Xena by becoming everything.
Friend and sister, fighter and conscience, lover and soul-mate.
Xena thought she'd be a simple companion.
But she couldn't have been more wrong.
Gabrielle isn't the world... she is everything, the plants and the stars, the gods and the dirt, the sky and the arms, the sorrow and the pain and the love and the peace...
And Xena thought she'd be a pest, a hindrance, a bump in the road.
But Gabrielle is everything and no one is more surprised than Xena herself.
