10 :: Subtext/Maintext :: Part Two
With six years to dive into for lovely lesbian leanings (go on, say it five times fast!), you know I could not do just one post of ten moments. Oh yes, part two is here.
And it is kinda queer.
(1) Xena and Gabrielle in the Cave in 'The Abyss', Season Six
Every second the two of them share in the cave is full of maintext devotion. From when Xena reels Gabrielle in (and places that relieved kiss to Gabrielle's forehead) to the declaration that Gabrielle wants her body to lie with Xena's family. Such sweet and enduring love-stuff.

(2) Gabrielle's First Thought After Being Hit By the Bliss Arrow in 'A Comedy of Eros', Season Two
I love this moment so much [lol]. So, you are tied up and then an arrow, that is causing all kinds of romantic havoc, hits you. You are imbibed with love & lust feelings. Who is your first thought of whilst under this influence? Surely not your best friend, whom you have only platonic feelings for! ...Right?
Oh Gabrielle, you are so busted. Too bad Joxer got in the way of who you were *really* looking for.

(3) Xena Wanting A More Heartfelt Farewell in 'The Play's the Thing', Season Four
Just a tiny little moment that is simply excellent. Xena's facial expressions are the best as she goes from 'long-suffering' partner to 'she is not even looking back at me' slightly miffed partner. She even says, "Aww, rats." when Gabrielle makes no move to turn back. It is very cute. And, of course, subtextually awesome.

(4) Gabrielle Chooses the Way of Friendship in 'Ides of March', Season Four
More pics, 'coz this is too good of a stretched-out moment for just one image. Because Gabrielle gives up a part of herself in the first two pictures. You may or may not have agreed with her Way of Peace, but being peaceful was the cornerstone of Gabrielle's life - and she finds a new path to follow, one that keeps Xena alive and with her. That is love.
And, of course, she explains all this to Xena in the last two pics. It is tender and full of acceptance. Just wonderful all the way around.

(5) Xena Wants To Touch Gabrielle's Face One Last Time in 'Locked Up and Tied Down', Season Four
Oh yes, one of my absolutely favorite moments. After Xena is brought to 'justice' and is about to board the ship for Shark Island, she and Gabrielle talk. There is a lot of finality in Xena's speech. And a lot of sadness in Gabrielle's face. But it is that ache, which Lucy Lawless does supremely well, upon Xena's face as she slowly reaches out to cup Gabrielle's cheek... That is what makes this moment so good and full of subtext.
She looks like placing her palm to Gabrielle's face is the last wonderful thing her life will ever experience.
Mmmm. Love it.

(6) Xena Begs Gabrielle To Lie in 'Legacy', Season Six
Another great moment where Xena proves that no path is a good one if she goes it without Gabrielle. Sure, they prove that in a million scenes, I know ;)
But this one is nice for me, because I tend to like Xena's desperate voice/face. And boy, does she let it shine well in begging Gabrielle to not tell the truth. Anything to keep Gabrielle alive.
This is aces.

(7) Xena and Gabrielle's Nighttime Reverie in 'A Friend In Need', Season Six
Terribly brief and, upon reflection, terribly bittersweet with all that is to come in this episode. But just the proximity of their sleeping arrangements, the tone in their voices and the overall warmth of this too short conversation. There is comfortability between them and there is a future they are both looking forward to - together. A sad 'what if?' moment of maintext love.

(8) Xena Regains Her Sight in 'Blind Faith', Season Two
I don't have good caps for this moment, so I offer this wallpaper. And it gets across the sweet moment that this scene is. Xena finally can see again and the first thing she sees is Gabrielle's face.
The 'sight for sore eyes' comment is wonderful as is the hug that follows. Very nice subtext... very nice indeed. :D

(9) Xena Cannot Give Up On Gabrielle in 'Is There A Doctor in the House?', Season One
Epic, my friends. This is the pivotal moment that all subtext gets it original spark from (in my humble opinion). Xena goes from almost blithely confident to worried to all-out sobbing in the span of ten or fifteen minutes. And in the throes of fear, she reveals just how important Gabrielle is to her. In her tears and in her seemingly-foolhardy determination... well, Xena shows all the love she has to give.
And it is all for Gabrielle.
Simply the best shit ever.

(10) Gabrielle Runs Her Fingers Down Xena's Arm in 'Who's Gurkhan?', Season Six
Wish I had a moving pic of this tiny moment. But I love this second of maintext/subtext/love stuff. As they sit there talking about murder and justice and Sarah... Gabrielle just slips her hand up and slides it down Xena's arm. Gah, I love it! It is gorgeous and says so much more than words ever could. Yum.
