the times, they are a'changin...
So, I read this and I've thought about it quite a bit. I also read a review of this article at AfterEllen.com, which got me to thinking more.
And so, here goes all my random (and not so random) thoughts.
When I was young and in school, this whole 'free love' or 'whatever' type of sexuality would have appealed to me greatly. For you are not just getting sex, but acceptance at a deep level at a very vulnerable time. And this is not new, not truly. Sex has always been all important and more than just a physical act. It is a form of connecting to someone else. I would even go so far as to say that that is all most human beings live for - that connection of some kind to other person.
But as the person at AfterEllen brought up - what good does this 'revolutionary' sexual attitude do for the world at large? And should it do anything for the world?
Now that I am older, I am much more political... even with my body and what I do with it. I am extremely proud of being a lesbian and I like to label myself that way. That does not mean that I am somehow locked down within the label. If I were to fall in love with a man tomorrow, I would accept that and deal with it. And my love would create a deeper desire than just looking at their body.
I read this article and felt torn.
Part of me is thinking how great this is. A sort of utopia of sexual exploration and no-harm, no-foul type of attitude. And maybe, if we are lucky, these kids will carry these ideals into adulthood. A more open generation that does not care about labels.
And then another part of me just sees it all as a little false. Rich and privileged children who do as they please because they know they can. Like a real life Cruel Intentions. And that they have no more ideals than anyone else who constantly gets their way. And they won't change the world at all... more than likely, once they hit college, they will all be 'straight' kids again and get married.
I know many bisexual and polysexual people. And they are great people. But they are making a conscious choice to be that way and everyone knows of it. And they are much older than these teenagers are.
It is not just a comfort zone, it is their life.
So should it just be taken from what it is, a sexual free-for-all that will eventually end and should be enjoyed for what it is?
Or should we all be a little saddened that the next generation is just out for themselves and care little about the future they affect?
I don't know.
