The Maude Abbott Lecture is a prestigious scholarly and/or scientific presentation by a revered authority in pathology who has contributed, and continues to contribute, to the advancement of pathology in the areas of teaching, research and clinical practice. The selected individual must be capable of giving a lucid and erudite lecture relating to contemporary pathology and should be a member of USCAP. Designation as the Maude Abbott Lecturer represents one of the most important USCAP honors.
The lecturer is selected at the interim meeting, by vote of the Board of Directors, from three candidates proposed by the Executive Committee. The lecture is delivered at the Annual Meeting approximately 18 months later.

John R. Goldblum, MD
2026 Maude Abbott Lecture

Dr. John R. Goldblum was born and raised in Pittsburgh PA (a lifelong Steelers fan). He earned his BS, MD, and did his AP residency and fellowship at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). He moved to the Cleveland Clinic in 1993, where he has served as Chair of Anatomic Pathology since 2002. The Division of Anatomic Pathologyis one of the busiest of its kind in the country with approximately 273,000 surgicals and 120,000 cytology specimens, with almost 110 staff members and is completely subspecialized.
Dr. Goldblum is the coauthor of Enzinger and Weiss’ Soft Tissue Tumors and has coauthored more than 400 peer-reviewed articles, mostly on GI and soft tissue pathology. He has also edited numerous books including Odze and Goldblum’s Surgical Pathology of the GI Tract, Liver, Biliary Tract and Pancreas; Rosai and Ackerman’s Surgical Pathology; Foundations in Diagnostic Pathology;and Surgical Pathology Clinics. Dr. Goldblum has served on numerous editorial boards including AJSP, Modern Pathology and Human Pathology.
Dr. Goldblum has served as faculty for many national workshops in both GI and soft tissue pathology for ASCP, CAP, and USCAP and has received career teaching awards from all three. In addition,he served as Short Course Coordinator for USCAP,Chair of the USCAP Education Committee (with the longest tenure as member and Chair of EC in the history of USCAP), President for USCAP in 2015-2016, and as a member of the USCAP Board of Directors from 2013-2017. Dr. Goldblum has received four major USCAP awards (the Mostofi Distinguished Service Award, the Harvey Goldman USCAP Teaching Award, the USCAP Board’s Distinguished Pathologist Award, and the inaugural Dr. Christopher D.M. Flecther Mentorship Award). Dr. Goldblum is dedicated to the next generation of pathologists and has mentored hundreds of residents, fellows, and young staff pathologists at the Cleveland Clinic and nationally.
Outside of pathology, Dr. Goldblum has seen Bruce Springsteen in concert 100 times and can play almost every Bruce song on the piano. He considers his most important achievement to have successfully raised four children – Drew (35), Ryan (33), Janavi (28), and Raedan (25) – and being married to a wonderful woman, Asmita, for almost 36 years. Dr. Goldblum and Asmita are proud grandparents to Caden(now 20 months old). Finally, he is also a crazed dog person and has two perfect dogs, Thor and Luna, who follow him everywhere.
