What if I don’t feel comfortable with an internal exam?
The internal exam gives us information about the pelvic floor muscles as well as the bladder uterus rectum and cervix. Uterus bladder and to a lesser degree the pelvic floor muscles can be palpated externally.
There are treatment techniques externally that can be as effective if you don’t feel ready for an internal exam.
Internal exams will not be performed:
- in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy
- in the first 4 weeks postpartum
- in the 6 weeks after pelvic surgery
- or if there are any signs that the body is not ready for this exam.
I just got my period should I cancel my appointment?
It is not necessary to cancel an appointment when you are on your period. We can defer the internal if you don’t feel comfortable. Some people will have increased pain during their period and it might be beneficial to be seen at this time for this reason.
