One Small Addition To Your Welcome Email, Hello Extra Revenue!
This tip applies even if you don't have paid subscriptions turned on.
Get your Substack beautifully set, functioning well, and ready to roll in half a day!
I’m sure you’ve heard allllll the Substack coaches and a hundred other writers tell you NOT to slack on your Welcome email.
Well, I’m here to become number 101.
Do NOT slack on your welcome email!
Here’s a real-life case study on why…
Many of you may not know that this newsletter is not the reason I came to Substack a few years ago. I was here for a good while and had a sizeable audience before starting this business.
Several months after creating this biz, I was updating my welcome email for my primary publication, as everyone should do regularly.
Upon revisiting the Welcome email, I realized that I had NEVER tied my two Substacks together. Meaning that all 3000+ subscribers over at my other pub quite possibly had no clue that my real-life job is to help them here on Substack.
Talk about completely missing the boat. 😂😂
The worst part of this realization was that, for several months, I had an influx of subscribers to my main pub due to a few viral Notes, and exactly ZERO of those subscribers were made aware of my Substack VA business.
By omitting an introduction to my Substack services in my other welcome email, I may have missed several hundred opportunities to work with those writers. UGH.
I pretty much broke the one cardinal rule I overstate in this post:
Don’t Be Surprised When People Aren’t Supporting Your Work
They don’t know what you do, what you offer, or what you want from them. This could be for many reasons.
Here’s what you need to do TODAY….
Go into your dashboard, head to settings, scroll down to EMAILS and EDIT YOUR WELCOME EMAIL!!
If you run a business that you want people to know about, add a link to it!
If you offer online courses that you want people to know about, add a link to it!
If you have multiple Substacks, TELL PEOPLE about all of them!
If you’re a psychic medium who does creepy ghost readings as a side hustle, TELL PEOPLE!
Whatever it is you want them to know…jump on the opportunity to inform every new subscriber about it in your Welcome email. It’s sent automatically every single time a new person subscribes, so USE IT.
If you haven’t fully customized it to your advantage, you’re wasting valuable opportunities here. And if you have no idea how to customize and optimize your Substack in a way that supports your greater business endeavors, PLEASE reach out to me.
We can have your entire ecosystem running like a well-oiled machine in a single afternoon, and you don’t have to lift a finger. That’s my job!
Do you link to your business(es) in your welcome email? If not, are you running off to tweak that right now?
Unstack Substack deliveries are meant to be short and sweet, and not clutter up your inbox or your day. 😊

Thanks, updating our welcome email is one of those duh things one easily overlooks, even though it is so easy.
I'm so glad you sent this! I actually had a good welcome email, but when I went into settings, I realized it was only set up for imported and paid subscribers, and my free (pretty much everyone right now) were receiving some generic rubbish. Not sure how I messed that up 🫣. Thank you for the nudge!
