Finvarra
|
It is not unusual for Finvarra to rise before the sun has surged over the horizon, gently but firmly nudging the previous evening's playmate out of bed, if there is one, and sending her back to her duties or primary residence. He is accustomed to cleaning and dressing himself, much to the dismay of the staff and his courtiers, but the prince bears the self-reliance of his grandfather along with his looks.
Nor is it unusual for the man to leave Arcadia, the country inherited from his late wife, Princess Una, in the capable hands of the seneschal for a day or two in order to spend time with his father. Arcadia, to the casual eye, is a land of farming and horses; the steeds prized even above those out of Ghenesh to the east. He's proud of them - peaceful farmers and ranchers existing on a level that most of his own family members sneer at. Prosperous folk, the Arcadians.
What is unusual is to return from one such journey abroad to find his land in ruins. Natives put to the sword, villages to the fire, towns reduced to rubble; the seneschal lying dead in the castle courtyard of Albion, the capital city. Arcadia had not needed defenses in it's long, peaceful history, but they will have them now. The dead are buried, spies sent in all directions to gather information, promises of aid from an uncle, a father, and the man who raised him as his own; none of this is enough to blunt the edge of Fin's anger.
Una's people trusted him to protect them as she had and he's failed, but it's only a temporary setback. He will find the people responsible and the streets of whatever realm hides them will run red and slick with blood. But first, there is a princedom to rebuild. To that end, he does something unusual for him, and unusual for the rest of creation.
Fin finally accepts there is a cause greater than himself. |
