Amendment to the Library’s Copyright Licence

The CLA has amended their Higher Education Licence for the upcoming academic year allowing us to scan a higher percentage from works by publisher’s who have opted in.  You might be able to have more scanned from a book than you could previously:

scanningThe extent limit for copying from print books is increased to 20% or two chapters, whichever is the greater, compared to the usual 10% or 1 chapter.

This applies to books published by participating publishers only and only where a digital edition is otherwise commercially unavailable.

The full list of participating publishers is being updated here: https://cla.co.uk/HE-licence-terms-amended-covid19

As usual, all scans must be hosted on the Library’s Digital Content Store so they can be reported to the CLA and secondary royalties calculated for rightsholders. Please request scans via library-scanning@bath.ac.uk or the online request form.

Loans and expired library cards

Students graduating this summer will find that their library cards expire on or around 31 July.  You may have received automated emails from the Library Management system advising you that books cannot be renewed after that date.

For now, any advice you’ve had from library staff already still stands: we would ask that you hold onto your loans safely for the time being.  If you are already away from Bath and have no plans to return for any other reason,  there is no requirement for you to return to Bath in person now or in the near future for the sole purpose of returning our books.

For many graduating students we have your personal email addresses on record. As and when we can offer further details in relation to procedures for returning your outstanding loans, we will pass that information on.

In the meantime, we cannot extend your membership of the library any further as your course has officially ended. We do need to keep a record of the loans’ status to manage ongoing library circulation services.  It’s possible you might receive further automated overdue or lost item emails in the days to follow but these can be safely ignored in the current circumstances.

If you have any further queries or concerns please contact us via library@bath.ac.uk

Library Services Update: Click and Collect; Library Scanning Services!

We are pleased to announce that some of our librarians are returning to the Library building on Monday 20 July to restart key services and to introduce some new ones. Please bear with us while we get these new services running smoothly and efficiently; we anticipate there will be high demand and that we may face a few unexpected issues! Your questions and thoughts on our new systems will be very welcome: library@bath.ac.uk

Is the Library building reopening?

The Library foyer is open with around 18 PCs and 2 multi-function printers. These are spaced in line with government advice. University Security staff are based in the foyer and you will need your Library card (University ID) to enter. Shelving is being added to the foyer for our new Reserve for Collection service. The rest of the Library remains closed during summer vacation while it is prepared for the new semester.

What services are starting?

  1. Reserve for Collection: this servicreserve for collectione is designed to provide safe and socially distanced access to our print materials, via online reservation and an in person self-issue. Please check that you are eligible and have permission to come to campus before placing requests (see restriction information below).

How does it work?

  • Library gates swipe card accessReserve for Collection uses the ‘reserve’ feature in our Library catalogue. When signed-in to the catalogue, you will now be able to reserve books that are on the Library shelves
  • Reservations will initially be limited to a maximum of 15 per user, to help us manage demand
  • Reservations are not permitted on items that are on loan. These items are not due until Semester 1, in line with our Summer loans policy, and may be with students who are away from Bath
  • shelves for collectionOur staff will collect these items in a safe and secure way. A label with your name will be added to each reserved item
  • Items for collection will be arranged in alphabetical order (by user surname/family name) on a collections shelf in the Library foyer on Level 2
  • You will be notified by email when your item is available for collection
  • Please be aware that we may not be able to provide items on the same day you placed your reservation, but we’ll do our best to make them available as soon as we can
  • You will neself-issueed your library card to enter the Library. Please use the hand sanitiser provided at the entrance gates and be mindful of social distancing as you collect your items from the shelf
  • You can then use one of the Self-Issue machines to issue the items to your account by scanning your Library card and the book – your Library PIN is no longer required
  • If you experience any problems with self-issue, simply take the books you have requested and alert us at library@bath.ac.uk asap, so that we can fix any problems and issue your books

Who is eligible to make use of this service?

  • Current University of Bath students and staff may access the Reserve for Collection service.   You need your valid library card to enter the library security gates and self-issue your reserved items.  Contact library staff by email if you have any library card queries
  1. Book returnsReturning items borrowed from the Library: Borrowed items can be returned at the Library via book collection baskets found in the Library foyer area, just beyond the security gates. Our staff will quarantine returned books for 72 hours and then follow approved procedures to re-shelve these safely. Please do not touch books in these book baskets
  • Please check you are eligible and have permission to come to campus before returning books at the Library (see above)
  • Borrowed items can also be returned at the Virgil Building during its advertised opening hours
  1. Library Scanning Services: two of our services are being restarted. These do not require you to come to campus.

scanningi.  Bath Copies: the Library offers a request service for copies of journal articles and
book chapters from our print collections. These are scanned (and processed by optical character recognition software so they can be read by screen readers) and sent to your University email address. The service is free and open to all students and staff of the University of Bath and to External Members of the Library. Please do not request more than one chapter/article from a given book/journal issue as that is the maximum amount permitted by Copyright. Please also be aware that we cannot scan from an item that is currently on loan.

ii.   Library Scanning Service for Academic Staff: The University subscribes to the Copyright Licensing Agency’s Higher Education licence. This grants library staff permission to make digital copies of articles and chapters for embedding into your Moodle course(s)/Library Lists, provided the material meets the terms of the Licence. The benefits of this are digital rights management and free access to book chapters and journal articles held within and beyond the Library’s collections.

As with Reserve for Collection, we anticipate that demand on the service may be high so please give us as much notice as possible to source what you need.

Please note that our  Inter-Library Loan service is still ‘Digital Only’ at the moment.

Your feedback on our systems and services is always very welcome. Contact us at library@bath.ac.uk

‘Read all about it!’ Your favourite UK and international newspapers are available online via our digital subscriptions

The Library’s current print newspapers may be inaccessible during lockdown, but our staff and students can still access a huge range of newspapers online. Did you know the following were available?

UK and International newspapers, including many popular UK broadsheets (e.g. The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The Independent, The Sunday Times and The Times) – our Nexis subscription provides full-text access to the international press, including major world newspapers and the trade/advertising press. Read our short guide for more information on finding specific newspapers on Nexis.

Financial Times – we have access to 24 years’ worth of FT articles via the ABI/Inform global database. The quickest route in is to search for FT articles in our Library catalogue and follow links to View Online. Please note that there is an embargo on content from the most recent 30 days.

NewspapersABI/Inform also includes hundreds of other newspapers and magazines, including for example The Wall Street Journal, The Economist and Sloan Management Review. You can also find these titles in our Library catalogue.

NB: if you need the most recent FT content, you can use our separate FT.com subscription. FT.com requires you to register using your University of Bath email address. The FT charges us based on usage. Please help us keep costs down by searching for FT content via our catalogue in the first instance.

Time Higher Education (THE) – our subscription to the electronic version of the THE provides unrestricted access to their news and commentary, university rankings, World Summit Series and more.

To quickly access the full content online and for free, you will need to follow the link for online access provided via the Library catalogue THE record. You then need to:

New e-books added to our Black Literature & Culture collection

“Race and racism is a reality that so many of us grow up learning to just deal with. But if we ever hope to move past it, it can’t just be on people of colour to deal with it. It’s up to all of us – Black, white, everyone – no matter how well-meaning we think we might be, to do the honest, uncomfortable work of rooting it out. It starts with self-examination and listening to those whose lives are different from our own. It ends with justice, compassion, and empathy that manifests in our lives and on our streets.” – Michelle Obama, May 2020

Reading is one of the easiest ways to move beyond your own world, educate yourself and hear the experiences of others. This week, we have added more e-books to our Black Literature & Culture collection. These include:

White privilege : the myth of a post-racial society / Kalwant Bhopal.

Resisting Racism / Kehinde Andrews.

Back to black: retelling black radicalism for the 21st century / Kehinde Andrews.

Why I’m no longer talking to white people about race / Reni Eddo-Lodge.

Any University of Bath student or staff member can access these for free, from anywhere, using their log-in details. Visit: https://bit.ly/2Msd3cb
