Described as “an old-timey shrub,” Abelia is one of those shrubs that can be found throughout the American South, but few people know what it’s called. I have a large Abelia in front of my house, have seen others all of my life, and was today years old when I found out that the name of this shrub is Abelia.
Members of the honeysuckle family, Abelias have hundreds of small trumpet-shaped flowers that attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Even though Autumn has technically arrived, it’s still very warm here (hot, actually), and I had hummingbirds at my Abelia today.
