Secwepemc Women Warrior Society Disrupt Meeting, No to Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline

Secwepemc Women Warrior Society said a resounding No! to the Kinder Morgan pipeline today at an illegal engagement session between government and elected chief and council in Kamloops. The session was to push forward the federal government’s recent Eyford report on West Coast energy infrastructure and supposed “tanker safety”.

The women’s opposition is to the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline proposing to cut through the heart of Secwepemc Nation, crossing countless clean rivers, creeks and streams, carrying 890,000 barrels of crude oil per day, coming from the controversial Alberta Tar Sands.

According to Secwepemc Women Warrior Society, Defenders of Mother Earth: “We take this uncompromising stance of No Pipelines! No Infrastructure! that is threatening our Sacred Water. We need clean water for our future. Without clean water there is no life.”

January 26th- Send a Card for Marie’s 52nd Birthday

Marie’s birthday is January 26. Please send her a card and brighten her day!

She loves to get mail from supporters and can receive mail from anyone — although she is limited in how many people she can write back.

Some ideas include:

* Photos of the wild you find inspiring
* Poetry
* Cards (handmade are always great)
* Letters
* Notes of support

Be sure to check the guidelines here for the details on what is allowed/not allowed, especially when creating handmade cards. You may also want to include her name and prisoner number on the card in case it get separated from the envelope during processing.

Letter writing events are always welcome, although please note that her support team is considering the next step and there will probably be a call for public events in the upcoming months. We hopefully will have a rewritten, redesigned tri-fold informational brochure available for events by Marie’s birthday, so let us know if you would like some shipped to you.

NATO 3 Jury Selection Has Begun, 2 Charges Dropped!

Jury selection in the NATO 3 conspiracy and terrorism case began this morning and continued until the late evening. In the morning, the prosecution announced that two charges (Counts 10 and 11) had been dropped. These were both unlawful use of a weapon charges. The defendants are now heading towards trial with 9 counts instead of the 11 they have faced since they were arrested in May 2012.

Jury selection will resume in the morning. The judge also stated that the trial itself will commence with opening statements on Tuesday, January 21st, so stay tuned for more information and plan to start packing the courtroom then!

The defendants seemed to be in good spirits and engaged in the jury selection process (to the extent they can be in this thoroughly disempowering system), despite the long hours today. Please take a moment to write* them a note of solidarity today to let them know you’ve got their back!
