Magic is the first sin.

Anna has been raised by her aunt to understand the evils of magic. After all, it did kill Anna’s parents. Now that she is nearly of age, Anna’s magic will soon be bound, something she dreads, but knows she must bear.

However, on her sixteen birthday, Anna’s life is turned topsy-turvy by the arrival of her mother’s friend Selene, Selene’s daughter Effie, and a mysterious boy named Attis. Maybe, just maybe she can choose a different path for herself.

This book somehow has dark YA dystopian vibes even though it takes place in contemporary London. Anna’s Aunt is straight up terrifying (imagine being raised by Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter). Meanwhile, Selene has raised Effie to be free-spirited and independent. It was very interesting to see how the two girls interacted with the people and events around them and with each other due to (or sometimes in spite of) their upbringings. I don’t want to give too much away, but I’m very intrigued to see what happens next in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley and Harper Voyager for an Advanced Reader Copy ebook.
