US Supreme Court Records and Briefs

This Internet Archive collection includes records and briefs received by the court - for cases granted and cases denied certiorari - spanning the years  1830 through 2019. Collection features:

  • official records from the lower court(s): the trial transcripts, evidence, and procedural documents that travel with each case up through the federal judiciary.
  • briefs: the petitions, responses, amicus filings, and supporting appendices submitted by the litigants themselves and by interested third parties. These briefs are the raw material of American constitutional argument. They capture the perspectives of individuals, corporations, civil society organizations, and government agencies pressing their cases before the nation’s highest court.
  • opinions for cases heard by the Supreme Court: the ultimate decisions reached by the highest court in the United States, demonstrating the logic and reasoning of the court.
