About
Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable, affordable fusion power to the world.

A Type One Energy co-founder, Dr. John Canik serves as the company’s Chief Science and Engineering Officer. With over twenty years of high-impact fusion energy research and technical leadership of extensive science and engineering teams, Dr. Canik's expertise is substantial.
Before his tenure at Type One, he dedicated sixteen years to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, initially joining as a Eugene P. Wigner Fellow. His roles at ORNL included Group Leader for both the Theory and Modeling Group and the Experimental Plasma Physics Group, as well as Interim Director of the Fusion Energy Division. In these capacities, he managed progressively significant portions of ORNL's fusion program and served as the main liaison with the Department of Energy's Office of Fusion Energy Sciences.
He has coauthored over 140 fusion technical papers, including a seminal paper on stellarators.
Dr. Canik holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, along with a B.A. in Physics and Computer Science from New York University.

Dr. Thomas Pedersen joined Type One Energy in early 2023 as Chief Technology Officer. His background encompasses three decades in fusion technology, with a focus on designing, building, and managing stellarators over the past twenty years, leading large scientific and technical teams of up to 60 people.
He earned an M.S. in Applied Physics Engineering from the Technical University of Denmark and a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT. Upon his graduation, he joined Columbia University as a faculty member. There, he spearheaded the conception, design, construction, and operation of the CNT stellarator, a device noted for its uniquely simple coil set and substantially relaxed engineering tolerances.
Between 2011 and 2022, Dr. Pedersen was the Director of Stellarator Edge and Divertor Physics at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics in Germany, contributing to the leading-edge Wendelstein 7-X stellarator, managing the development of 20 diagnostic systems and advanced research on limiter- and divertor plasmas, culminating in the achievement of stable, fully detached island divertor operation. His work earned him a European Research Council Advanced Grant for pioneering the world’s first laboratory electron-positron plasmas. While in Germany, he also continued his educational and mentorship roles as a professor of Physics at the University of Greifswald.
He has received multiple accolades during his career, including a DOE Junior Faculty Award and an NSF CAREER award. He was elected as a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2015.

Kairus Tarapore brings over 30 years of diverse global experience to Type One Energy. He has previously served as Global Chief Human Resources Officer for 15 years at three multi-industry companies focused on technology, manufacturing, defense, and service/finance. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Make-A-Wish International and The Child Center of NY.
Most recently, Tarapore was CHRO at Xylem, a leading global water technology company developing innovative technology solutions to the world’s water and critical infrastructure challenges. Prior to that, he was the Chief Administrative Officer for BWXT (Babcock & Wilcox Company), a global provider of energy products and services and a defense contractor. He also served as CHRO for Ceridian Corporation and held several management positions at General Electric, in Human Resources and Six Sigma Quality across USA, Canada and India.
Tarapore earned a bachelor’s degree in Business from Sydenham College at the University of Bombay in India, a master’s degree in Human Resources from XLRI Jamshedpur, India, and completed the Advanced HR Executive Program at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is also a GE Six Sigma Quality Leader and Black Belt.

Matt Miles has more than 25 years of experience in the energy and infrastructure sectors, including oil and gas, process, nuclear fission and, most recently, fusion. Prior to joining Type One Energy as Senior Vice President of Marketing and External Affairs, Miles spent seven years with General Fusion, where he successfully leading efforts to craft public policy, establish DOE programs benefiting private sector companies (such as INFUSE and the Milestone Program), develop the global end-user market, and guide appropriate regulatory frameworks for the fusion industry.
Miles headed international sales for Generation mPower, a leading Small Modular Reactor company, after successfully establishing a nuclear supply division within Edgen Murray Corp., a large, multinational steel supply company. He earned a B.S. in International Trade and Finance from Louisiana State University.

As Type One Energy’s Chief Operating Officer, Ryan Guerrero brings 25 years of experience in technology and innovation, including taking complex, large-scale aerospace and naval products from concept to market. His leadership expertise spans product design, integration, testing and commercializing cutting-edge propulsion and power generation technologies for application on nuclear submarines.
Guerrero was a Senior Director at Northrop Grumman for nearly two decades, leading the strategic development and production of next-generation nuclear-powered submarine capabilities. At Northrop Grumman, Guerrero held critical roles managing programs across a board and diverse portfolio of businesses. Before joining Northrop Grumman, he spent half a decade at Boeing on aircraft and space propulsion programs, including NASA’s Space Shuttle Program, as a Materials and Process Engineer.
Guerrero holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington and a Master of Business Administration from Pepperdine University.
