The 2026 IBSA Goalball World Championships brought together 16 men's and 16 women's national teams in Hangzhou, China, as athletes competed for world titles and valuable experience on the road to the LA28 Paralympic Games. For the Turnstone community, the tournament featured Turnstone Accounting Assistant and six-time Paralympian Lisa Czechowski on the USA Women's National Team and Huntington native Zach Buhler on the USA Men's National Team. Team USA Women advanced to the semifinals and ultimately finished 4th in the world with a 2-3-1 record. The Americans earned victories over Argentina and Japan, highlighted by a quarterfinal win against Japan to secure a top-four finish. Asya Miller led the team with 11 goals, while Eliana Mason Young added 9 and Amanda Dennis contributed 6. Team USA Men finished 8th in the world with a 2-4 record after advancing out of pool play and reaching the quarterfinals. The Americans recorded victories over Israel and Germany before competing in placement matches against Argentina and Ukraine. Josh Wellborn paced the offense with 21 goals, while Calahan Young added 15. Throughout the championship, both teams showcased the skill, resilience, and determination that continue to make Team USA a respected force in international goalball competition.
Turnstone athletes Owen Donahue, Charlie Lettenberger, and Gerard Willis represented the organization at the 2026 GLASA Great Lakes Games in Wilmette, Illinois. Donahue earned a silver medal in the BC3 boccia division after posting a 2-2 record, while Lettenberger captured silver in the BC4/5 division. Willis competed in Para Powerlifting, successfully lifting 150 pounds in the Legends 97 kg weight class. The event brought together developmental through elite Paralympic athletes from across the region, showcasing the talent and dedication of adaptive athletes in a variety of sports.
Francie Dykstra Indiana University Parks, Recreation & Outdoor Studies Minors: Recreation Sports Management & Hospitality Francie joins Turnstone after previously working as a Facility Resource Assistant, where she quickly grew to appreciate the welcoming and supportive community found throughout Turnstone. Through her Sports & Recreation and Development internship, she hopes to learn more about creating meaningful experiences through sports, events, and service to others. One of her favorite experiences so far has been helping with boccia and seeing firsthand how adaptive sports bring people together. After graduation, Francie plans to attend a Christian ministry school and continue pursuing opportunities that allow her to serve others through recreation and community engagement. Thomas Guisinger Trine University Sports Management Thomas is entering his senior year at Trine University and is excited to gain hands-on experience through Turnstone's Sports & Recreation internship. His interest in adaptive sports and community impact led him to pursue an internship with Turnstone, where he hopes to learn more about program operations, event management, and the day-to-day work involved in creating positive experiences for athletes. Thomas enjoys the way sports bring people together and is looking forward to building relationships with athletes, families, volunteers, and staff while supporting a variety of adaptive sports programs throughout the summer.
Steve Florio has been selected as an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball Women’s Sitting National Team at the 2026 USAV Sitting Cup in Orlando, Florida. The tournament features some of the top sitting volleyball teams in the world and serves as an important international event leading into the 2026 World ParaVolley World Championships. Florio’s selection reflects more than his success as head coach of the Purdue Fort Wayne women’s volleyball program. Since 2012, he has played a major role in growing sitting volleyball in Fort Wayne through clinics, athlete development opportunities, and long-standing support of Turnstone adaptive sports programs. His mentorship has also helped impact athletes like Campbell Wood, a rising sitting volleyball standout who has earned multiple USA Volleyball Development Team opportunities and won gold with Team USA at the 2025 Youth Parapan American Games in Chile.
Turnstone Flyers athlete David Dowling returns to the U.S. Power Soccer National Team this month for the 2026 ADAPTandTHRIVE Invitational at the newly opened Arthur M. Blank U.S. Soccer National Training Center near Atlanta. The camp serves as another key step in Team USA’s preparation for the 2026 FIPFA Powerchair Football World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
