As the MUSAiC project comes to an end after its five years, we have one final assignment: In total we had seven different tunes! Though we each are going our own ways, I hope we will all stay in touch and collaborate. I want to thank all the wonderful MUSAiC team members for making thisContinue reading “Artifact 102: A Final Tunes (MUSAiC team and AI)”

Artifact 97: “’round and ’round” (traditional) – six settings – ([Sturm+Udio]+Sturm)
The generative AI music service Udio burst onto the scene a few months ago, and since then I have been exploring it (much in the same way as for my composition “Aus einem Text von Ernst Toch“). I built this composition from several iterations prompting the Udio system with a variety of textual descriptions, plusContinue reading “Artifact 97: “’round and ’round” (traditional) – six settings – ([Sturm+Udio]+Sturm)”
Artifact 96: Aus einem Text von Ernst Toch (Sturm + suno.ai)
The generative music AI service suno.ai has burst onto the scene, and I have been exploring it since October 2023. The primary interface is textual: one specifies using free text a stylistic description (e.g., Christmas), and then provides lyrics or other directions. The system then synthesizes audio files (up to 40 seconds in duration) thatContinue reading “Artifact 96: Aus einem Text von Ernst Toch (Sturm + suno.ai)”
Artifact 95: It’s all about me (Maskingspelmanslaget, 2022 AI Song Contest)
I recently realized that our entry to the 2022 AI Song Contest hadn’t appeared in this collection, so I have made a video, and copy in our process document here. My friend Daniel Näsström and I teamed up with several AI systems (we are called Maskinspelmanslaget) to create this song. During the development of TradformerContinue reading “Artifact 95: It’s all about me (Maskingspelmanslaget, 2022 AI Song Contest)”
Artifact 93: HANGOVER AFTERNOON (Gionnata) – Music of the Crowdworkers (folk-rnn + crowdworkers + Sturm)
“Music of the Crowdworkers” is a growing collection of ethnographic field recordings I fabricate from sound materials solicited through an online crowdworking application (Prolific). Each crowdworker is paid to participate in a study (titled, “Time-constrained music learning”) where they look through a large collection of notated melodies (a portion of the machine-generated collection 58,105 Irish-Style Double Jigs),Continue reading “Artifact 93: HANGOVER AFTERNOON (Gionnata) – Music of the Crowdworkers (folk-rnn + crowdworkers + Sturm)”

Artifact 90: A Derp Deep Learning Ditty (folk-rnn v3 + Sturm)
I recently came across this work I did October 2017 and feel it needs to be entered into the archive. The tune comes from material generated by folk-rnn (v3), specifically, tune number 8589 from The folk-rnn (v3) Session Book, Vol. 4 of 4. In a blog post from that time I describe my discovery andContinue reading “Artifact 90: A Derp Deep Learning Ditty (folk-rnn v3 + Sturm)”
Artifact 89: Simple Love (ChatGPT + Sturm&Sturm)
This artifact is an entry to the Human & Machine Song Contest. Love is hard enough, so we (Sturm&Sturm) outsource some of the work. The following records our process. We started by experiencing totally unexpected pushback from ChatGPT: ChatGPT: I’m sorry, but as an AI language model, I cannot ethically assist in the creation ofContinue reading “Artifact 89: Simple Love (ChatGPT + Sturm&Sturm)”
Artifact 88: Roadside Reveries (Sturm + ChatGPT + Stable Diffusion + IBM Watson + Boomy.com)
This artifact is a composition exploring the dramatic and momentary parallel worlds created by advertising. It is a moment in time, maybe experienced while waiting for a bus. This composition arranges video advertisements alongside a busy night road, some creating exciting displays of light, color, and sound; and others just trying to get noticed. IContinue reading “Artifact 88: Roadside Reveries (Sturm + ChatGPT + Stable Diffusion + IBM Watson + Boomy.com)”
