🌿 Palm Sunday means Psalm 118—a prayer both on Jesus’ lips and in the people’s praise. We pulled out palm branches and read through Matthew 21, remembering the day Jesus and the crowd turned his entrance into a royal parade. But why the spontaneous praise?

We looked at passion for God’s praise: in the streets, in the public square, and at the table. Along the way, we explored what anger really is—a passion and energy for what matters to you; a voice waiting to be heard. 🕊️

Psalm 118 and Matthew 21 give us two key pictures of anger: (1) when it is rightly ordered (Jesus in the temple) and (2) when it is wrongly ordered (the leaders’ response).

The reality is that my heart and will need to be changed—converted to be passionate about what God loves! Not unfiltered anger for my will to be done, but a healed and redirected passion for His will. We want to learn to pray with Jesus: “Father, may your kingdom come, your will be done”—on earth, in me, and through me.

Psalm 118 helps us see Jesus for who He is, give Him the praise He deserves, and gain a passion for #onemoreperson to enjoy and praise Him. 🙏

We’re heading into one of the most meaningful weeks of the year. What are you looking for? A place to reflect? A seat at the table? A reason to celebrate?

Week 3️⃣ of “To Be Honest”

👉 It leads us straight to our hurts. How do we take those hurts to God and to others to find what we need (attention) and the gift (healing)? We looked at Psalm 137—a searing, white-hot prayer born from a place of deep pain.
Hurts left unacknowledged often slide into denial (using pleasure to cover the pain) or into resentment and revenge.

If you’re exploring spiritual questions—and especially if you’re skeptical of the whole thing because you wonder how God could be good in a world with so much pain—this might be for you. It’s for all of us, really. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t asked, “God, do you see? Are you awake? Do you know what just happened to me... to us... to them?”

You might be shocked to find things like Psalm 137 in the Bible. One of the greatest gifts of the Scriptures is their ability to embrace the real world—not a pretend or fantasy one. Psalms of lament give us the words to bring our real hurts to God and others; they are the first step toward healing.

They remind us of a vital truth: Which world did Jesus come to save? This broken one. Whose lives did Jesus come to redeem and heal? Our wounded, sick, and painful ones.

I actually forgot a part of the worship service on Sunday. Right before the Scripture reading, I meant to share these words:

Q: How is the Word of God to be read and heard? 🤔
A: With diligence, preparation, and prayer; so that we may accept it with faith, store it in our hearts, and practice it in our lives. (From the New City Catechism, Question 42).
Prayers like this are for us to receive. They teach us to be honest with God, even in our deepest wounds.

✨ Bonus: The second picture is Chip Dodd’s marvelous book, The Voice of the Heart, which is helping us shape this sermon series. I highly recommend it!

Continuing our “To be Honest” series, we sit with Pslam 126 and heart’s gladness and sadness. Looking back at the restoration that God has accomplished in the past gives us the confidence to ask God to restore us once more. The same God who has restored us before can restore us again!

One of the great gifts of the Psalms is that they show us our hearts. They invite us to be honest before God and others—to live “open and unafraid” (David Taylor).

As I said in Sunday’s message, the first step in being honest is always going to involve feeling the feeling. There’s no shortcut around, under, or over your heart; you have to go through it.

This season of “Lent” (the 40 days before Easter) gets its name from an old English word for spring, when the days “lengthen” as the daylight lingers. In church history, we use this season as an opportunity for reflecting, remembering, and repenting as we recall the death and resurrection of Jesus that saves us. Lent is a time for clearly facing our own condition in light of the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Try praying through one Psalm each day. Or, if you want to dig a little deeper, try reading through all the Psalms in 30 days (there is a calendar on our website for more resources on learning to be honest).

First of the new series! ✨

We look at Psalm 27 and the core human emotion of fear. Over these five weeks, the Psalms will both show us our hearts and teach us to be honest with our hearts to God. They teach us to pray, as David Taylor says, “Not to escape your life but to be open and unafraid about it”. Psalms help us express our hearts to God, not praying what we “think” we are supposed to, but what’s real and what we really feel.

Today in Psalm 27 we get a prayer for when we are feeling fear – and learn to feel it and face it and take it to God, discovering help, wisdom, and faith.

New sermon series this Sunday! 🕊️

God’s Word tells us to take care with our hearts. ❤️‍🩹 He calls each of us to guard and keep our heart, for it is the wellspring of life—everything flows from it (Prov. 4:23). We live in a cultural moment that encourages us to dwell in our feelings, but what really lies deep in our hearts? How can we know it, feel it, tell the truth about it, and trust it to God?

John Calvin famously called the Psalms “an anatomy of the soul.” As we move toward Easter, we want to grow in “heart health.” To help us lift up our hearts to the Lord, we are going to root ourselves deep in the Psalms.

When I look at our world, I want to see people who have truly come alive—people who live wholehearted lives with God and others. There’s no shortcut; the path lies directly through the heart. Let’s go there together, learn how to lift our hearts to the Lord, and experience the freedom it brings.

Revelation 21–22 paints a beautiful picture of God’s new creation: life in the new heavens and the new earth. We discover a real place, packed with God’s people and filled with His presence. This vision focuses and fuels our work as a church today—in this place, with these people—as we point to God’s presence and His call to salvation!

Join us in serving a meal to the women and mentors of YoungLives! 🍽️

📣 WHAT: YoungLives exists to mentor and encourage teen parents in their faith, life, and leadership. Every week, YoungLives clubs gather together to provide childcare and dinner so that parents can enjoy an evening with their mentors, hear about Jesus, and have some fun!

⏰ WHEN: Thursday, March 26th at 6:00 PM

📍 WHERE: Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church

We’re looking for volunteers who can help us cook and serve a meal for about 30 people. More details to come!
