home home home

This week has been tiring and busy and AWESOME and enlightening and FUN. I am headed home today (in fact, checking out of the hotel in about 20 minutes).

I hope I get to attend this conference again next year (when it'll be back in Vegas--MUCH easier to get to!). It was really interesting meeting people who have the same challenges we do. Or people who have challenges we've solved! Haha.

I mentioned this the night I posted, but I was in a huge hurry and barely even described it, so...I wrote a little H50 as SN AU for h50_flashfic:

Title: Pants Night (DW | LJ)
Author: [personal profile] trinaest
Rating: G
Summary: Steve and Danny risk the wrath of Kono and have to deal with the consequence. Note: This is H50 as Sports Night. If you're familiar with SN, you should be able to tell who is filling whose shoes. If you don't know SN this is probably still readable!

The AU challenge is still open, due to my trip to Orlando and me crashing mentally by the end of each day. So go post some H50 AUs! We've decided not to close the challenge until this Sunday the 26th. :)

And now, time to go HOME. \o/

really?

Okay, so I ordered some breakfast to be brought to my room this morning, mostly to guarantee my morning glass of milk (my usual AM routine, established both to give me a quick protein/sugar boost in the morning and to have something to take my pills with). Also, breakfast possibilities are uncertain so we figured ordering something would be a good idea.

I ordered granola and fruit. GRANOLA AND FRUIT. This is what I gotCollapse )

I am...really not accustomed to staying in a fancy hotel. LOL

(FTR, first time EVER IN MY LIFE I have had room service served on a rolly table. With LINENS.)

I've barely eaten half of it now and I'm full.

ETA: It occurs to me that the reason I can barely eat anything is that my body thinks it's 4 am, rather than 7...

drive-by post of overwhelming tiredness...

I am in Orlando (for the next four days). I got up at 3am and then spent all day travelling to get here, so I'm about toast right now. (I'm also on EST, which is really weird!)

Just wanted to say two things:

* I just posted a little H50 as SN AU over at the h50_flashfic comms. (DW | LJ) That was fun (although surprisingly difficult; I kept unconsciously trying to Sorkinize the dialogue!)

* If you wanted to write something for the AU challenge, you have a little bit of a reprieve because I am exhausted. The soonest the challenge will close is some time tomorrow. (More likely to be in the evening, but I'm not going to guarantee anything.) Go post AUs! :D
I meant to post the May writing roundup last night. I don't even know why I didn't. It was like one minute I said, "Okay, I just have one post I want to write tonight," and the next minute...I went to bed. Travel-induced craziness, I think.

Nik and I are flying to Sacramento this afternoon (FOR MY BROTHER'S WEDDING! \o/) and will be back on Sunday. My online availability will be spottier than normal; I expect we'll be pretty busy the whole time. I'm excited about the trip and the wedding, but still a combination of annoyed and disappointed at the fact that the weather is supposed to be better at home in Portland this weekend than it will be in Sacramento. Forecast for Saturday in Sacramento: RAIN and 70 degrees; Saturday in Portland: SUN and 84. Sigh. Sun tomorrow, too.

Oh well. Hopefully my brother has a plan for his outdoor wedding which may very well be rained on! (Who'd have thought we couldn't plan on sunshine in Sacramento in June? Crazy.)

* * * * *

In writing-related news, I am cruising right along on my hawaii_bigbang story, which makes me very happy. It's currently 7600 words and I expect it'll end up somewhere in the neighborhood of 20k. The first draft is due soon, but posting doesn't happen until August or September.

Next up is my [community profile] romcomorama story (Sleepless in Hoboken), which is currently 2400 words. It has a flexible deadline, but I expect I'll be posting it in July.

I have plans for a bunch of other things, but (other than entries for [community profile] h50_flashfic/h50_flashfic and random small things that I'm sure will come up) I'm going to concentrate on these two for now.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone. :D

May Writing Roundup

Wow, May was a big month for me. It might not look like it since mostly I've been working on a couple of yet-to-be-posted WIPs, but I wrote a LOT last month! 20,012 words, in fact! O_O

I'm pretty sure I haven't mentioned it on here because I was worried that I'd crash and burn immediately (like the last time I tried it), but I signed up for getyourwordsout and pledged to write 150,000 words this year. I started out a little shaky in January (only made about 2/3 what I should have) but then really badly failed in February (due to being so sick with the stupid antibiotic allergic reaction and related problems, mostly). In March, April, and May, though, I was able to gain ground and, amazingly, ended May slightly ahead of the pace for the year! I am ridiculously excited that I've already been able to regain the progress I lost in February.

These are my totals so far this year:

January: 8462 (goal: 12,741)
February: 1646 (goal: 11,508)
March: 15,359 (goal: 12,741)
April: 18,264 (goal: 12,330)
May: 20,012 (goal: 12,741)

For a total as of the end of May (and actually year-to-date since I haven't written anything yet in June, haha) of 63,743 words! (The goal for the end of May was 62,061.)

These are the stories I've posted since the last fic roundup:

the listCollapse )

Four stories, one fandom (haha, big surprise; hi H50 ILU), for a total of 7383 words. Two Gracie stories (one grown-up, one age 10), one unrepentant porn, and one angsty Steve story (it's okay, it ends up happy!).

fic brainstorming help!

You know, I don't know how many H50 people actually have me friended (not that many, really, but hopefully enough), but...I could use some brainstorming help for a story I'm writing. I'd do a poll, but I really want free-form answers, so:

Would you tell me what you think Danny Williams' defining characteristics are? (These can be physical things or non-physical, character traits, whatever--I'm just looking for jumping-off points for something I'm doing and want to see if other people come up with things I haven't considered.)

---

Aaaand. Wow. I swear I had something else (non-H50 related, I know you're shocked) to add but it has completely left my brain. So, um. Yeah, maybe I'll remember tomorrow.

do you ever have a "dumb day"?

Today was one of those for me. I have lost count of how many dumb things I managed to do today. They included:

* Leaving various documents inaccessible at work when I wanted them at home, even though I have and use DropBox FOR JUST THIS PURPOSE. All the time. It's not like I'm not in the habit.

* Not figuring out for, oh, more than half the damn day that I hadn't logged into our Production system at work--I'd logged into a test system in the morning to check on something, then never switched over. Made some other stuff I did later in the day really wonky. Also made me look like a bit of a fool. Thankfully I didn't actually do any harm. *facepalm*

I'm sure there were others--I KNOW there were others--but I have a headache and I'm sleepy, so we'll just leave it at that.

Of course, being me, I felt the need to go and explain to my supervisor just exactly what an idiot I'd been today. (I always tell on myself--not that I felt I was going to get in trouble or anything, just...I didn't get a single fucking thing done today that wasn't somehow screwed by my brain being out to lunch without me.) At the end of the day, I felt like I'd been pedaling backwards the whole day. Making no progress, but madly pedaling. Ugh.

I promised her I'll bring my brain with me tomorrow.

[Fortunately, I am normally pretty sharp, so on the rare occasion of a day like today people just laugh at me and let it go. *shrug*]

Related to nothing, but I wanted to mention because I think no one at all has bid on me yet... :(

I put up two offers in the helpthesouth fandom auction:

1) I WILL KNIT YOU SOMETHING! I am a damn good knitter, if I do say so myself. There's plenty of evidence on my flickr (or on Ravelry, if you're a member). Bid here!

2) I WILL WRITE YOU SOMETHING! I, well, I don't know if I can make as strong a statement about my writing without feeling really self-conscious (I wonder why that is? I don't feel weird at all about tell you what an awesome knitter I am, LOL). I've been getting some good feedback lately, anyway! The evidence is here and on my DW/LJ. Bid here!
Last month, I joined ficfinishing as both an Author and a First Reader. I was able to finish the (first draft of) the fic I signed up with AND I had my first experience of being a First Reader for someone. It was awesome! I loved the author support and also being able to read and encourage a writer struggling to finish their fic.

So, I've just signed up again. :)

This month, I want to finish It Runs in the Family, the last (?) in my H50 New Jersey series. I promised I'd write this one, but I've been shying away from it. Maybe this will get it moving beyond the one short scene I've written already. (starting at 335 words)

Since I've now successfully completed a round, I was allowed to sign up for two fics to finish. I need to get my [community profile] romcomorama story, Sleepless in Hoboken, finished this month so that I can concentrate on my H50 big bang, so I signed up with that one too. I think I could use some cheerleading on that one, so I'll be looking into using a first reader myself this time. (this one is starting at 1785 words)

On a related note, the ficfinishing comm can use more First Readers! If you like reading stories in progress and giving authors encouragement, please consider signing up. I loved it when I did it last month and will definitely be offering my services again. Go here for more information about what it means to be a First Reader and how to get signed up. (If you decide to do it, join ficfinishing and look for the recent First Reader sign-up post.)

I recommend the comm for both Authors and First Readers!

bid on me and help the south!

I've never participated in one of these before, but I thought I would throw my hat in for helpthesouth now that I've kind of got the hang of this writing thing again. Haha.

I am offering a custom-knit pair of fingerless mitts/armwarmers, knit to your specifications and size OR FIC!

Please go bid on me! :)

April writing roundup!

In April I posted 7 stories, but finished 8. The eighth needs some major rewriting so it may not show up for a while, since I have a couple of big deadlines coming up. These are the six stories from April that I can tell you about:

April was a busy month!Collapse )

The seventh is, of course, my Remix story, which is available to read but I can't tell you which one it is! :D

Total for the month in posted, non-anonymous stories, was 7363 words in two fandoms. (Total including remix was ~10,600.) Oddly, I actually WROTE 18,264 words in April. A good chunk of the difference is the previously-mentioned story that needs a rewrite, and the rest must be a couple of other WIPs.

-----

Sort of relatedly, I have now read all three remixes of my work and I love ALL OF THEM. :D :D

(I linked them in my previous post; one Sports Night and two Hawaii Five-0, go read if you haven't!)

Remix! \o/

I just went back through the last month's posts and discovered that it's been kinda all fic, all the time around here lately. Sorry about that (not that I think you mind the fic posts, but maybe I could actually post something else once in a while??).

I will try. But not today, because I have some fic-related things to post! LOL

I was going to put Remix and my April fic roundup all in this post, but I just discovered that I have THREE remixed stories to show off here! So the fic roundup will be separate. :D

1) Remix is now live (though authors are still anonymous). This is the official story written for me:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (The Baseball Metaphors Remix) (2521 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Sports Night
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Casey McCall/Dan Rydell
Characters: Casey McCall, Dan Rydell
Summary: Dan and Casey love to push each other's buttons.

It's a remix of Baseball & Centaurs, a silly little story I posted back in March, and it is WONDERFUL. Please go read and leave nice FB. Great Casey and Danny voices, banter, jealousy. It's awesome. :D

2) Remix Madness! There are two remix madness remixes of my stories! I haven't had a chance to read these yet as I was just notified (and I'm at work, shh). But I've skimmed them both and can't wait to actually read them! Wow!

Cold Comforts (The Uncomfortable Remix) (1946 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Mature
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Characters: Steve McGarrett, Danny "Danno" Williams
Summary: Five times Steve McGarrett experienced snow.

A remix of Cold Comfort, one of my NJ stories.

-and-

Fighting Spirit (The Long Way Round Remix) (1908 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Characters: Grace Williams, Steve McGarrett, Danny "Danno" Williams, Rachel Edwards, Stan Edwards
Summary: Grace chooses to attend a quirky college right next door to the Naval Academy. Steve is not pleased.

This is a remix of Fighting Spirit, with Grace NOT going to Annapolis but to somewhere else nearby. :D

3) And finally, this one has nothing to do with remix, but I thought I'd toss it in here anyway. Yesterday I posted a story in response to the H50 Flash Fiction Challenge: traditions. It's a sequel to my previous flash fic story, Fighting Spirit, taking place approximately 6 years later.

The Fleet Is In (2278 words) by favicontrinaest
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Characters: Steve McGarrett, Danny "Danno" Williams, Grace Williams
Summary: "I told you you’d like San Francisco."

You can also read this one on LJ or DW, if you prefer.

Finally got my own flash fic written and posted to [community profile] h50_flashfic and h50_flashfic this morning!

Title: Fighting Spirit
Author: trinaest
Rating: General audiences
Word Count: 1260
Summary: Grace’s first day of college isn’t what most people picture when they think about the first day of freshman year.

Read it on DW or on LJ.

Also, a quick reminder! There is approximately one day left in which to post your response to this challenge. Tomorrow, we'll be closing the "beginnings and endings" challenge and posting a new one. :)

 goss  made me art!!!
cover for Chutes and Ladders

It's a cover for Chutes and Ladders (which I just wrote and posted last night, by the way!). And if you look closely, practically every detail from the fic is in the artwork! Amazing! Thank you so so so much, goss! <3 x a million

She also made the fantastic Danno <3 Steve icon I'm using up there. So much talent!

The prompt for this was "rainy days." That's how it starts, but it strays a little bit. Thanks to ivyblossom  and celli  for reading and approving! :D

Chutes and Ladders (858 words) by favicontrinaest
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Not Rated
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Characters: Grace Williams
Summary:

“Do you think the rain will stop soon so we can swim, Danno?”

For some reason, thinking about a hammock and stars led to this. And hey, look! Apparently I am still capable of writing shorter things on occasion. :D

No Star Is Lost (434 words) by favicontrinaest
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Summary: “The stars look different here,” Danny observes.

I had a sinus headache tonight and couldn't concentrate properly on any of my WIPs. I told celli  that I wanted to write but for my headache and she said, "write something for kissemdanno !" I'm not entirely sure why that sounded like something I could do with the headache (as opposed to anything else I was writing), but apparently it was! (And my headache eventually eased, too--nice!) So, 1113 words later, here it is. :D

First Date (1113 words) by favicontrinaest
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0 (2010)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steve McGarrett/Danny "Danno" Williams
Summary: Celli's prompt was "awkward first date." I may have failed, mostly, on the "awkward" part, but it's a first date! And there is kissing! Also pure, unadulterated SCHMOOP. (You have been warned. LOL)

Please read either at the LJ community or on AO3. :)

DW code, anyone?

With all the problems at LJ recently, it seems like more people might be wanting to start a DW account. I have two invite codes if anyone would like one:

2F3AW4TXC7X53AAAMSMT

Please let me know if you use one so I can remove it from the available list. :)

(And Lishan, you should use the one I already gave you!)

so much to talk about!

March, and this first weekend in April, have been very busy! Between the new Hawaii Five-0 Flash Fiction communities and me writing like a madwoman last month, there's a lot to share! So. Here we go.

Hawaii Five-0 Flash Fiction is LIVE!

All initial admin/housekeeping has been completed and our FIRST CHALLENGE was posted this morning! \o/

We've set it up on both LJ and DW ([info]h50_flashfic on LJ or [community profile] h50_flashfic on DW). A welcome message is here and here. The FAQ is here and here. And a suggestions post (for future challenges) is here and here. Note: Challenge responses may be posted to one community or both, but there's no real need to double-post. We'll do a round-up post at the end of every challenge, including links to all fills on both communities.

The first challenge is posted and will continue for the next two weeks. (DW | LJ) Please come play with us! (Also, feel free to publicize as you like--the more the merrier!)

~~~~ ----- ~~~~
And now for the March fic roundup (and also February, since I never did one for that month; February was a bad bad month).
I was a little prolific...Collapse )
~~~~ ----- ~~~~

I'm sure you've been seeing these all over your flist, but AO3 enabled the subscription feature this week. So if you're inclined to subscribe to me (I do post nearly everything at AO3 first)...

I'm at favicontrinaest and fandoms in the immediate queue mostly include Hawaii Five-0 and Merlin. I still think I'll get to some Sherlock at some point, but for now H50 and Merlin are all you're guaranteed to see in the near future.

~~~~ ----- ~~~~
So, upcoming for me this month are: Remix (posting 4/23, fandom TBA), Glompfest (posting 4/21, Merlin), and the H50 AU (hope to post this month!). And some other stuff, most likely.
At some point, I will be participating in this (but probably not in April!): [community profile] remix_goes_wild The (surprisingly long) list of authors who've put their fic up for remixing is here. (I'm on it! Want to remix something I've written? Join the comm and have at it! :D)
Hawaii Five-0 Flash Fiction!
thestarsexist and I, with encouragement from celli, have started flash fiction communities (on DW and LJ) for Hawaii Five-0. At the moment, we're exploring interest and getting some input on guidelines for the communities via polls posted here on DW and here on LJ. If you're interested, please go vote and join/watch! :)
I'll also post a prompt suggestions thread soon so you can give us some input on suggested themes. We hope to officially start in the very near future.
PS If anyone would like to help publicize by posting this announcement in your own DW/LJ, please feel free!
    Yes, very hot! I rarely need to go outside here, haha. The two hotels are almost perfectly connected by the convention centers between them. There's a span of maybe 30 feet I have to traverse…
