24th-Sep-2010 04:29 am - welcome to my journal
little miss sunshine
i suppose you would say this journal is semi-friends only. i use all the screenings (public, friends-only, certain groups, and private) pretty regularly. but i do have a blog elsewhere, and my main purpose on returning to livejournal was for iconning. so if you are expecting regular posts, that may not what you will find here.

if you do want to friend me, for whatever reason, that's fine, that's just my disclaimer. i'll read your posts (lj hosts many of my friends' primary blogs) and i'll probably comment, but don't expect me to post myself often, i usually just post random things, occasionally friends-locked posts i don't want on my public blog and my new icons once a month.

if you came here for icons, i just added links to my respective icon posts on the sidebar, i do an icon post once a month.

desire
Christmas = not entirely interesting this year! Spent it with my family, but I'm an only child, so after exchanging gifts, we watched some of the movies people got and went off to do our own things.

I'm debating my schedule for next semester still. I'm thinking about taking Biology instead of Physical Anthropology. I'm more of the humanities types, not so much into science, so I thought Anthropology might be a nice easy way out xD but I need a lab still, so I might as well just suck it up and get it done.

We've been having internet issues and on top of that my desktop is having mobo issues again and won't start, so I've been on my laptop (the one where half the keys stick, so it's kind of ghetto and I have to attach a keyboard to the laptop to use it). Anyway for some reason, my laptop is the only computer in the house that picks up on the wireless after resetting the router several times, so if my family wants to get on I have to record everything so they can connect directly through the router (which means I can't be on wirelessly at the same time) and when I'm on wirelessly they can't be connected directly. Since we're very snowed in, I think everyone's getting angsty about people cutting in on their internet time :X. And by everyone we of course mean me!

Thinking about school stresses me out. I wish I knew what I was doing, I feel like I'm getting so old :3
12th-Nov-2007 11:28 pm - topic 7: intelligent design
euphoria
Supporters of Intelligent Design propose that the existence of complex organisms and a complex universe in itself gives abundant evidence that there must be an intelligent designer behind the creation. Theologian William Paley gave two examples of this using, a man-made object, a watch, and another giving a proposed divine-made object, the human eye. Paley suggests something as intricate as a watch was made in such a way that it would function and if the parts were put together in any other way, it would not. Furthermore, if we were to find a watch, we would not assume that the watch had just always been there, but that it had been created. Alternatively, Paley found the eye as one of the most profound examples of complex design in existence. He turned to biology to give examples of the numerous ways in which the eye was made to exactness, and asserted from there that it must have then been made for that purpose by an intelligent designer. William A. Dembski, along these same lines, argues that life is not just complex, but that it is also specified. In being specified, we naturally agree that there is intelligence behind it. Dembski suggested that there are only three ways in which something can be produced: randomly, by natural law, or by an intelligent designer. He also turns to biology to address that an intelligent designer is the most sound answer. However, the biggest proponent to the theory, Darwin's theory of natural selection, also finds it's roots in biology. Darwin claims as unlikely as it is, organisms have been shown to develop in a way that they are most adaptable to their environments. These developments over a long period of time, have the potential to be as miraculous as the eye, but in other circumstances have shown to cause deformities. The latter leads to the idea that natural selection cannot be intelligent.

After nearly a semester's study of Logic, I find that I can not readily accept the argument of intelligent design as logically sound. I find in itself it appears logical, but that it relies on too many fallacies of presumption that I can readily name. Firstly, as the book hints at, any argument that relies on analogy in most situations is considered logically weak. Likewise, in a lot of instances I find that there may be an appeal to unqualified authority. I found the exception to this to be the paragraph about physicist Michael Davies who points to the "anthropic principles" of natural laws that show without so many exact laws in place the universe would not be able to stabilize and hold life. But I even found myself skeptical to this, as I find rational thinking does not necessarily prove anything. While it is definitely miraculous that everything fell into place as it did, and the chance of this happening is one and a billion, that chance still exists. People often disclaim things as impossible because they have a low probability, but that is not how probability works. If there is a one and a billion chance of something happening, it could happen in a billion years, or it could happen in 3 years, or it could happen twice in five years. But beyond that, I feel as if many arguments that relate back to biology coming from someone who is not a biologist is something we need to really look at, as the understanding behind it may not be as sound as we are expected to believe. And finally I feel as if this argument commits the fallacy of appeal to ignorance. Simply because we have no evidence of complex things being created by a non-intelligent designer does not mean it must follow that everything is created by an intelligent designer. I do not find the argument from Design completely implasible but I feel it chooses to assume too much that we at this point do now know.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the text of the next 4-7 sentences on your LJ along with these instructions.
5. Don't you dare dig for that "cool" or "intellectual" book in your closet! I know you were thinking about it! Just pick up whatever is closest.
6. Tag five people.

I went out under the stars and whispered, "You are not forgotten, Eriu. You are not forgotten."

Soon quite a few young ones from Fiachu's clan were among my students, too. Drawn by curiosity, retained by interest.

~ The Greener Shore by Morgan Llywelyn

There's actually 5 books within arms reach of me right now! I think this one was actually the closest. The next closest is also by Morgan Llywelyn, who I'm a new fan of after reading her book, Druids. She writes really fantastic historical/fantasy type stuff. And the other three books are my Philosophy, Logic, and Math textbooks which is impressive that they're actually that close to me because I haven't looked at them all weekend.

I did just finish watching Air Gear though! I watched eps 7-25 in maybe a week. I had a short delay when Youtube took them down because I much prefer just streaming stuff then having to sit and download because I'm lazy.

one more class ahhhhhhhhh
4th-Sep-2007 10:08 am - and caffeine is great!
marlene - life is ok
omgs.

so hear I've been all stressed out during week 1 of school and feeling like the biggest slacker ever, and I'm actually ahead on everything rather than behind.

my sleep schedule is beyond messed up (i.e. yesterday i went to sleep at noon and woke up at 8pm o.O) but it's okay as i'm taking all evening classes this semester and haven't sought a job(as of yet).

i just e-mailed my logic teacher about an obvious misprint in the syllabus making what we're supposed to do for the assignment a bit ambiguous and apologizing for asking only 8 hours before the class, when i recheck the dates and realize it's not due until NEXT week so yarghhx! here i am chugging mountain dew livewire for no reason. (but livewire is still yummy!)

and i made up all the work i was supposed to do last week while i was watching all the dvds my dad got me for my birthday every hour i wasn't in school so i'm actually all set.

so probably boring post for everyone else, but isn't realizing you're not actually doomed the best thing in the world!
