Cemetery Ruin

The old cemetery on the Umbra Plantation land (Magnolia Cemetery) has a large number of plots, stones, and Mausoleums that have been damaged over time.

While not old by some standards here, especially around Charleston that’s not the case. The area was in the center of the US Civil War, families have gone, even federal troops made this an army camp.

Over time things here are lost, or repaired, but no in between.

An Old Friend, Farm Goat

These are not ‘petting zoo’ type critters. They are old species farm animals. If I remember correctly a type of goat suitable for living in the hot southern environment. Years ago I think there was a little sign of some kind near their pens.

A nearby plantation has a farm, grows food, wool from sheep, and this guy and his friend…with no known social value except they look interesting. Always a nice place to walk around and maybe grab an odd photo.

Random Swamp Scenes

These photographs were taken early afternoon as we made our way out of the nearby swamp rookery.

For something different I swapped out a long lens for my ‘walk around’ zoom. I didn’t plan on trying for any wildlife, just some random images of the local scenes.

The first below is actually the Great Blue Heron rookery. It looks completely different this time of year. Especially since the duck weed is extra heavy.

Next is from the swamp land behind the rookery area. There is a defined land/dike separation which has kept the vegetation completely different.

Thick brown mosquito fern covers the water keeping the small cypress islands distinctly different. I can’t imagine what was watching us, the gators love to hide here.

Last is a look mid swamp, but we turn off to woods here to get back to the car. An old wooden bridge, stronger than it appears, crosses the water several times before ending at another trail which loops back through even more swamp.

All this land is owned by the Magnolia Plantation. Some days you can find people from out of town on the main trail, however for the most part you’re on your own. Since we live nearby this is a quick walk for us…when it’s not too hot. 🥵
