About Us

Vision and Mission

Toni’s Kitchen is a food ministry of St. Luke’s Church in Montclair, NJ.

Our goal is to ensure reliable access to healthy food for residents of Montclair, Bloomfield, and West Orange.

Toni’s Kitchen provides food to our neighbors in need in ways that respect their dignity, improve health and foster independence.

We use a community partner model to enhance access and connections to programs and resources that encourage healthy, independent lives.

Toni’s Kitchen, which is named after its first cook, Antoinette “Toni” Green, has been in continuous operation as a non-profit, charitable entity under St. Luke’s Church since its founding in 1982. The kitchen is staffed by volunteers of all faiths from throughout the community. Much of the food is donated by local organizations, business establishments and individuals, and serving is done by volunteers.

Our History

Toni’s Kitchen was started in 1982 by parishioners at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Montclair with the simple mission to “serve our neighbors in need.” Following the lead of a soup kitchen in nearby Paterson, people arriving for a hot meal were treated as guests and served restaurant style. The parishioners felt that this approach offered more dignity and respect than the traditional “stand in line” soup kitchen model.

At the time, Antoinette “Toni” Green was the cook for the South End Day Care Center, also housed at St. Luke’s. Toni agreed to be the lead cook for the new ministry and brought her years of experience and talent to the project. Described as a generous, “spirit-filled and amazing” woman, she was the perfect choice both to cook and lend her name to the new program.

Over 2,600 volunteers now help us fulfill our mission. We work with more than 95 community partners to ensure children, families and seniors all have reliable access to healthy food. In 2025, we provided over 2 million meals in the community.

Today, Toni’s is “more than soup,” with healthy food available in our dining room and throughout our community as well. Toni’s Kitchen also connects our guests to wellness services that help them lead more independent lives.

Guest Stories

At Toni’s Kitchen, we know that neighbors who need food support also find other local services helpful in gaining independence and stability. For that reason, our Choice Pantry (CP) is managed by a Social Worker, Nancy Xenakis, who collaborates to bring other services such as mobile medical/dental services, nutrition counseling, insurance enrollment, and other important services on-site during pantry hours.

We work with on-site complementary service partners to assist with access to important services. This collaborative approach amplifies the benefits of having access to healthy food by making strong connections to other helpful services that are already available in our local community.

The spirit of community, cooperation and connection is in everything we do at Toni’s Kitchen. Deeply talented partners work so collaboratively to make sure that all our neighbors can meet their most basic health and nutrition needs. We are grateful for the amazing support we receive from our community every day!

Guest Interactions at Choice Pantry

Recently, the following observations at Choice Pantry of guests helping other guests by:

  • Offering translation services in Creole for a new guest, who recently arrived from Haiti, during the registration process.
  • Lending a hand to a seated guest with a mobility impairment by helping them stand when it was their turn to pick up groceries.
  • Carrying another guest’s filled grocery bag out to their car as it was too difficult to manage on their own.
  • Helping another guest scan a QR code to register for auto text notifications of important announcements from Choice Pantry.
  • Giving one of their grocery bags to a guest who forgot theirs.
  • Sharing their positive experience with Zufall mobile dental services and encouraging another guest to schedule an appointment.
  • Informing others about Choice Pantry’s services and accompanying them to register.
  • Explaining their experience and pointers for applying for NJ FamilyCare to another guest who is ready to apply.
  • Letting another guest have a free children’s book that they both had their eyes on.

“Doug” came to Toni’s Kitchen CP because he was recently laid off from his job as a Project Engineer. As part of the CP registration process, Doug shared the details of his current challenges: losing his job suddenly in a field where he had more than ten years of experience and now being in a position of needing help.

Nancy Xenakis, a Social Worker at Toni’s Kitchen, connected Doug with Mary Conroy, an employment coach who works with CP guests. Mary helped Doug enhance his resume and develop a job search strategy over several sessions in person and over the phone.

One day in early July, Doug came to the Choice Pantry check-in table and happily shared that he had accepted an offer for a new Project Engineer position at an architecture firm in New York City. Doug said, “This would not have happened if I didn’t have the support of Toni’s Kitchen.”

Doug also told us that he wants to give back to the community by volunteering. We love seeing how he wants to help others who are struggling.

“Jenny” (not her real name) has been a guest at Toni’s Kitchen Choice Pantry for one year. She is an example of someone who is genuinely service-oriented and fosters community.

Jenny has participated in many of Toni’s Kitchen service offerings. Weekly she picks up the groceries for her adult brother who has health and mobility related issues. She also referred him for individual counseling at Toni’s where he completed 13 sessions, all of which she accompanied him to. Jenny says the counseling “has made an absolute difference in his life.”

Jenny has participated in the two social work activity groups (vision boarding and mindfulness) and one educational/support group (caregivers of children with a disability) that CP offered in the spring. At each of these she connected with the group facilitator and her fellow group members in both English and Spanish–Jenny is fluent in both.

During the activity groups she willingly helped several of her fellow group members with general understanding and/or completion of the activity. In the educational/support group she imparted her own experience and tips from supportng her adult daughter with a disability. She would often stay after the groups officially ended to continue supportive discussions with some of the group members. Always humble, Jenny says, “I’ve gone through a lot with my daughter; if I can help even one person with something, it means a lot to me.”

Eric (not his real name) was unemployed when he first visited Choice Pantry last Fall. He was thrilled that the food offering included healthy choices, especially fresh produce for his family. During his time with us, Eric was able to take advantage of education guidance to help find the best support for his child with special needs and also employment counseling that assisted with resume development and his job search.

Now, a mere 8 months later, Eric and his wife have their own apartment, Eric is working in a grocery store, and his children are doing well in school. Money is still tight and Eric knows that road ahead will require careful money management and a bit of luck. But Eric is optimistic and tremendously grateful. “I always feel welcome here and am thankful for the understanding and resources that you have given us,” says Eric.

A regular guest of Toni’s Kitchen’s Choice Pantry (CP) for almost two years, “Andy” (not his real name) is an outgoing, positive and warm individual who always comes to CP with a wide smile on his face and easily engages in conversation with everyone he comes into contact with.

A self-proclaimed entrepreneur and poet, he openly shares his past innovations and future ideas as well as his poetry with both Toni’s staff and guests. HIs enthusiasm is contagious to those around him at CP, fostering a warm sense of connection and community.

Andy comes weekly for groceries and particpates in the majority of onsite partnerships CP has. He has received an eye exam and eyeglasses through Optical Academy, a dental cleaning and exam through Zufall Dental, health education, blood pressure screenings and vaccinations through Zufall Medical, and is interested in joining the next Food, Health, Hope (hypertension and diabetes management) program cycle.

Andy, always eager to learn about available services, stops by every onsite partnership table and chats with the leads. Given his ease with technology, he has also helped some guests in line register for certain services by scanning QR codes or finding an organization’s website online.

Andy’s story is just another example of how Toni’s Kitchen provides out guests with services and support to help improve their lives.

Jean (not her real name) has been a Toni’s Kitchen (TK) Choice Pantry (CP) guest since February 2024. Jean resides by herself and lives in Montclair. Jean was laid off from her graphic design position in New York City at the end of 2023 which has caused her financial instability. At CP, Jean has been able to receive healthy groceries and was connected to three other CP onsite partnerships to assist her. Family Promise helped by paying her rent for the month of April so she can remain in her apartment. National Council of Jewish Women’s Center for Women along with CP’s individual employment coaching service were able to assist Jean to revise her resume, embark on her job search and prepare for her interviews. Jean shared that he is appreciative of TK for helping her regain her footing, develop a plan for moving forward and she is confident that she will land a job soon.

“Eve” (not her real name) has been a guest of Toni’s Kitchen since August 2022 when she first came to Choice Pantry. Eve lives by herself in Montclair. In addition to receiving groceries, she was a participant in the Food Health Hope program in 2022-2023, which focuses on controlling one’s glucose, blood pressure and weight for those at risk or diagnosed with hypertension and/or pre-diabetes/diabetes. Eve credits this program with helping her get her levels within normal range, and she happily informed Toni’s Guest Support Coordinator that she was no longer eligible when she was screened for the 2023-2024 program cycle.

Eve consistently has a positive demeanor when she visits Choice Pantry. When Toni’s began registering its Choice Pantry guests as a way to better organize and manage services, Eve received a registration card. She was thrilled, saying “This is like my new driver’s license! Thank you!”

Eve likes to give back to the community and has inquired about becoming an ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher when she saw informational flyers on Choice Pantry’s community resource tables about ESL classes being offered to Choice Pantry guests to learn English. Born and educated in Cuba, Eve is bilingual and is an art curator and dealer. Her curated exhibits extend around the United States and abroad including a recent showing at the Montclair Public Library.

“Kerry” (not her real name) has been a regular guest of Toni’s Kitchen since October 2022. Kerry lived by herself locally and experienced unstable housing, unemployment and health issues in recent years. In addition to Choice Pantry, Kerry came to Toni’s Kitchen for hot meals. A person of strong faith, Kerry commented on the beauty and serenity of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Church sanctuary setting for Choice Pantry. Periodically Kerry brought books to Choice Pantry to share with other guests–one of which was “Little Women,” which she believed represented the “sisterhood” at Toni’s Kitchen. She also made some clothing donations of items she “no longer needed but hopefully someone else can use.”

In addition to providing Kerry with some resume tips after being laid off from Air Canada during Covid, Toni’s Kitchen referred her to one of its partner organizations for employment assistance. Kerry also took advantage of obtaining a computer tablet through the Affordable Connectivity Assistance Program offering last year and completed the pre-screening process for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), both during Choice Pantry service.

Kerry’s last visit to Toni’s Kitchen was in late September 2023 and several staff members and volunteers wondered about her whereabouts. Last month, Toni’s Kitchen’s Guest Support Coordinator was delighted to receive an e-mail from Kerry updating us that she now resides in Johnstown, PA, in a home that she owns. Her Methodist church assisted with her relocation and she is active with the community church there. She feels fortunate that she is now an actual homeowner. Toni’s Kitchen’s Guest Support Coordinator gave Kerry suggestions for three social service organizations in Johnstown to consider that might be able to assist her with getting her utilities turned on and getting fully situated.

Kerry still has more work to do for her daily life to fully stabilize. But she is safe and cheered by the progress she has made. Kerry promised to remain in touch and expressed her appreciation for Toni’s Kitchen: “One life changed forever by your friends and your refusal to marginalize the downtrodden.”

When “Terry,” (not her real name) a local resident, reached out to Toni’s Kitchen for some help with groceries, she did not expect the holistic support she would experience. Terry has been a guest of Toni’s Kitchen since September 2022 when she first came to Choice Pantry. Terry lives by herself in Montclair, has several chronic health issues, is unable to work and receives Social Security disability income. In addition to Choice Pantry, She began participating in a number of programs at Toni’s Kitchen, including the Food Health Hope (FHH) program focused on controlling one’s weight, blood pressure and glucose levels, mobile dental services and educational and supportive counseling. Terry says that she is eating healthier now thanks to the special produce and dry goods as well as healthy recipes she receives through the FHH program. She has positively reduced her values related to diabetes and hypertension.

Terry shared that she has found the counselor at Toni’s engaging, supportive and easy to talk to. Terry recently was moved off a months-long waitlist for counseling with the mental health practitioner where she receives her medical care. But because she has had such a good experience with counseling at Toni’s, she decided to continue her counseling at Toni’s instead. Terry is looking forward to 2024, feeling healthier and supported through her connection with Toni’s Kitchen.

Late last year, Dania, 25, learned from a church worker in Bloomfield about the food pantry at Toni’s Kitchen. Quickly, she became a guest, making weekly visits to stock up on fresh produce, canned goods, protein and diapers for her three children, ages 6, 2 and 1. One day she noticed a flyer. When a volunteer translated the contents into Spanish, Dania learned that she could also enjoy a hot meal on the days she visited the pantry. Dania passed the word to assorted relatives, all of whom reside in Newark, but live too far apart to see each other regularly.

Now, Thursdays are family days for Dania, her stepfather Louis, her sister Anna, and Anna’s daughter, Emily. Reunited around a table inside the soup kitchen, they catch up with each other’s lives as well as enjoy a hot meal before moving on to the pantry to select supplies. “They cook really good food here,” Louis says in Spanish, relying on TK staff member Britney Noboa, 24, to translate for him and his stepdaughters.

“This is when I get to see my sister,” Daria says of Anna, 26. That means a lot, given all the separation the sisters have endured since leaving their native Honduras. Dania came to the U.S. in 2014 and settled in New Jersey. Four years later, Anna also emigrated, but settled in Massachusetts, where she had her daughter Emily. Earlier this year when Anna got sick, she realized she needed family care and moved to New Jersey.

Her relocation has worked out well for the family. “Transportation is better here,” says Louis, 37, who met Anna and Dania’s mother in New Jersey after making his own migration 21 years ago. “Everything here is closer.”

Nodding in agreement, Anna says that there’s also “more stuff to do here.” Best of all, she says Emily, now 3, is able to attend pre-K, which was not accessible when they lived in Massachusetts. “Emily knows her numbers in English and Spanish,” Anna says proudly. “She loves to write her letters.”

As the meal draws to a close, both Dania and Louis ask for boxes so they can take home the chili remaining on their plates. Meanwhile, Emily tucks into a brownie. “Very good,” she says, with an enthusiastic thumbs-up. No translation is needed. Her delighted smile says it all.
