Scott Luton’s Post

Good morning friends, network colleagues, & (some of you) fellow Gen Xers! 😁 DYK: on January 28th, 1985, one of the largest musical supergroups of all time United Support of Artists for Africa (aka USA for Africa) would come together to record "We Are the World". The song was written by Michael Jackson & Lionel Richie - - and produced by Quincy Jones & Michael Omartian. The single has sold more than 20M copies, making it one of the biggest singles of all time. The project went on to raise some $63M, and by some accounts, about 90% has been used for a variety of humanitarian projects in Africa. But given the schedules of all of the top musical artists involved, the group had a very limited recording window - - about one night, in fact - - to get it right. Iconic legend Quincy Jones knew what the project's biggest challenge would be: personalities. Jones would place a sign over the front door of A&M Studios in Los Angeles that would welcome the 46 stars as they arrived. It read: "Check your egos at the door". As a child of the '80s, the song & sights from "We Are the World" will live with me forever. And as a sucker for a good story, the ability for all of these individuals to set aside their massive egos & jam-packed world travels, all for the greater good, is certainly Good News to me. We all could stand to learn a lesson or two from this effort. Now the effort wasn't without a few passionate disagreements. Goosebumps just thinking of that song!

Anytime you give of your time for a worthy cause, why not do so with grace? Glad they were able to pull this off in the end. The song still stirs emotions in the soul. Happy Friday, Scott Luton.

And besides the amazing initiative and the money it raised for an unarguably worthy cause, it was a really great song too! Who doesn’t like to sing along??!!
