About My Story-Book
This journal is primarily for slash - especially Riptide slash. This means m/m, homosexual relationships. If you do not wish to read about this, or are not over the age of consent in your country, please go no further. Otherwise, welcome to my story-book. You can read my stories here. Your feedback is welcome and valued. And come on over to pier56, our shiny Riptide squee-community. Come and find out all about the pretties, join the love in the land where we don't have to make the slash up because it is right there in the script. And on the screen. I'm not kidding.I also post on other things as the mood takes me, especially about books I'm reading. If any of my interests also interest you, please feel free to friend me. I will almost certainly friend you back. Love, Tinx | It's canon... |
Well it has been a while!
Have a little something from me:
A Many Splendored Thing on AO3, Riptide, rated R, Nick/Cody, precanon.
In which I play with a relationship strained by returning from Vietnam :D
So I did the Hurt Comfort Exchange again and as always it was awesome.
I didn't get Riptide this year (can't have everything) but I *did* get the most awesome Famous Five epic (I do not use the word lightly). Futurefic, and um Kirrincest (as adults) :D
Knight of Cups, Page of Wands
Dick/Julian, 43k words, NC17. Beautifully written. I treasure it. Go and read it now.
I wrote:
A Sleight of Hand, Sherlock Holmes, Gen (ish, you've met me before), Sherlock & Watson, 3600 words

I read the latest Alex Delaware (Kellerman) at the start of lockdown, and enjoyed it more than I have for a while. It inspired me to mainline them, so I read about 25-33 or so (the ones I have on kindle).
I’ve never mainlined them before due to getting the early ones from the library, so having to take what I could get, and then hanging out, these days, 12 months between releases.
Anyway, I’ve gone back to the beginning, I’m up to 4, (luckily mum gave me birthday money for books), and I’m really enjoying them (not really news, I know). Helpful that I’ve forgotten most of the plots so it’s like a brand new series, only with the joy of familiar characters and the comfort of knowing I’ll like them.
I’d also either missed or forgotten the continuity of the minor characters and the back story were given; the beginning of Alex and Milo’s friendship, the beginning of their relationships.
The 80s attitudes to sexuality are instructive, also - not so much the overt stuff, but the inbuilt stuff, because, of course, the books I’m reading now were written in the early eighties. I read them first in the late nineties and what’s also interesting is that at the time, I didn’t notice.
It feels like society changed very fast, but of course we’re talking 25 years so now I just feel old.

i have a little time to write due to our lockdown, but I’m lacking motivation, I fear.
so please if anyone would enjoy a ficlet, prompt away, any fandom I’m familiar with is fair game :)

First I did a thing, and then I did another thing...
The first thing I did was sign up for Night on Fic Mountain, which was cool. (Even cooler: I got an awesome Alex Delaware gift - you can read it here: We Were Running Against the Wind, 1850 words, Milo & Alex, Post-series
This is potentially an expected thing, although I've never done Milo POV before (I don't think...):

Fandom: Alex Delaware
Genre/Rating: Gen/PG
Wordcount: 1078
Pairing/Characters: Alex Delaware, Milo Sturgis
Summary: While working a case, Milo reflects on his friendship with Alex.
The next thing I did was pick up a pinch hit for Fandom 5k. For Agatha Christie's The Man in the Brown Suit. Who's read this? Who loves this as much as I do? (Aside: the rest of Christie's work I can take or leave. This one is on my desert island list. Go figure.)
Anyway, I never thought of it fannishly, although my recipient pointed out the (blatantly obvious) Harry Lucas/Harry Rayburn|John Eardsley ship which I think I'd just kind of latently accepted all along. And I happily set out to write that.
Only somehow I didn't, and instead wrote an adventurette for the ensemble in Paris. Which, I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed. And I still ship Lucas/Eardsley :)

hurtcomfortex this round, and it was awesome! Also I got Riptide and its awesome too, and you should go read it immediately if you haven't already :)
This fic I wrote was Sherlock Holmes (Conan Doyle) which I've never written before, Holmes/Watson (which I don't necessarily ship in the books, although RDJ and Jude Law are another matter entirely) luckily for a delightful set of prompts!
You can find it here: A Place of Rest, PG, 1100 words, Watson is ill. Holmes is a surprisingly attentive nursemaid.

Thank you so much for being willing to write a story for me!
1. Riptide
What can I say? My always-and-forever-fandom, and my beloved OTP Nick/Cody. However, you need not slash - whatever you do with these boys I will love. And I like Murray too.
H/C is a beautiful thing in this fandom. Kidnapping, piracy, peril on the high seas (or in the air) - or in a good old fashioned coffee shop - all is delightful. I am all about AU's (mundane, superheroes, historical, whatever) and I love canon too.
Here's some fun prompts but please, anything. Really. Anything. Grocery shopping. Watching the game. Tanning (it was the 80's, all right?). Anything!
Slash prompts:
- What if they're on a date but only one of them knows it?
- They have to go away for a case and end up in the honeymoon suite (did Murray do it on purpose? or just a mixup?)
- One of them has to act gay for a case, and the other one has to watch
Gen prompts:
- kidfic
- Murray gets a puppy (hint: Watch Girls Night Out first!) Chaos ensues.
- Chopper crash
DNW: unremitting darkness.
2. James Asher Vampire Series
- I love Simon. I don't necessarily love Simon/Lydia, but I can wear it, and if that's where you're going, that's fine. A good writer can sell me James/Simon also. (I have zero interest in James/Lydia, sorry)
Simon/Other (male) canon vampire or Simon/Male original character (vampire or not) would interest me. (The only het pairing involving Simon which interests me is Simon/Lydia.)
A character study of Simon or a story about Simon's life whether or not during the "Asher years" would be lovely.
3. Alex Delaware
I like Alex. (I barely tolerate Robin). I like Milo. Case, character study, AU. Anyone can appear, or not appear, but please don't give me an Alex/Robin centric love story. Early-canon angst/break-up etc is fine, maybe Alex and Milo hanging out after the event/during the many mini-cliffs.
Alex and Milo as kids? That would be fun, especially given the darkness we know of in Alex's childhood (the last book gives a brief synopsis of Milo's family but if you're not up that far it's pretty immaterial).
You can go beachy and sunny, the canon is fairly noir of course but play with it if you wish. (Less koi ponds and navel gazing are often better koi ponds imho. That being said, I've read everything JK pens, so I must like something about it lol. Also I am possibly guilty of at least one koi pond of my own, come to think of it.).
Cross with the Golem stories? That would be fun. Supernatural elements, also fun.
Slash is fine if that's your jam but I don't generally ship them, my headcanon is more maybe some curiousness/UST on Alex's part.
All of the above is just intended to give you a place to start - I hope most of all you enjoy the writing, and if one of my prompts helps with that, I'm happy. If something else is better, I remain happy!
Thank you <3

Ooh this looks like fun!
I have selected "Any" for all of the freeforms, because really, how they hurt is up to you :) I'm here for the pain and the comfor, and you (I hope) are on board for the setup :D
Themes I always like:
- believing themselves to be "second-best" or a "rebound relationship" and it cant last
- believing the other is dead (mistakenly, ideally!!)
- only safe/able to rest/begins to recover when with the other
- dying until the other arrives
- nightmares
- possibly hardly needs mentioning, but slash. LOL. (Gen is fine. But don't gen it up on my account!)
Thank you so much for being willing to write for me!
Riptide
My one true fandom and I love Nick and Cody always. If you can write these boys for me, I will be forever in your debt. In this fandom I would not really expect to see an enemies to friends/lovers scenario, or rape scenario, but if you can make it work I will read it and enjoy it.
Starsky & Hutch
I love these boys too :) I can see more conflict between them, so if that's how it takes you, that will be lovely (provided it all comes out in the wash at the end of course :D) Shippy or gen, all is good.
Sherlock Holmes (Downey movies)
Sherlock and John. I ship them like woah in these movies. Alas the tagset is gen, but if your fic is shippy I will not mind at all. (Nor if it is not).
What I do love is that, whether you ship them or not, Sherlock is clearly betrayed by John choosing Mary, and clearly feels he is the better one for John, be it as a friend, in times of need, or as you wish. Something exploring this would be lovely.

Nancy Drew, gen, dark(ish - the theme, I suppose, but not the fic itself). I've never written this fandom (although I have notebooks full of the Hardy Boys lol), I rarely write gen, or dark (although to be fair, this is not really very dark - neither was my recipient's prompt so I hope they liked it).

To my dear writer: Thank you so much for being willing to write a story for me. I've given some brief details below, but please go with whatever you like.
Riptide:
I love Nick/Cody. I love Nick and I love Cody, separately but preferably together. (In any permutation you like). Whatever you want to do, as long as it has Nick and Cody in it, I am going to love. Gen is fine. Slash is fine. Angst, h/c, romance, buddy-fic - you name it, I want it.
AU is fine if you want. I like all the AUs (even coffee shop ones). I like if they're animals :) Or werewolves. Werewolves would be nice.
Retell an ep as werewolves, maybe? Or domestic werewolf curtain fic :D
You are welcome to include Murray. I like Murray a lot. You can slash him with Nick and Cody if you want, although I prefer Murray/Nick/Cody to Murray/Nick or Murray/Cody. (Personal headcanon is Murray/Joanna or Murray/Quinlan - these are welcome too).
What don't I like? Wingfic. ABO, although for these guys, I'll go for it. Canon says they're really soft with each other and I do like that, even if it's subtle.
I love the Vietnam stuff, PTSD, nightmares. Wounded is fun. Lost, presumed dead, facing the world alone, fake dating, misunderstandings over who loves whom, I love all this.
If you want to write het/femslash for this fandom I would prefer a gender-bender please.
Lord Peter Wimsey
I love to read stories about Peter from someone else's perspective. I also love to hear more about his PTSD; although I'm less fond of his post-case jitters. If slash is your thing, I am fond of Peter/Bunter, especially UST; but I love gen too.
I really like that Bunter is the only one who really understands him.
Wartime stuff, present or future fic is absolutely fine.
Magnum P.I.
I like Thomas. The ensemble is welcome, and you may slash at will, although that's not really my interest (*gasp*) in this fandom.
I like the character of Magnum. I like his friendship with Higgins (I don't slash them, but you may if you wish - I don't mind). I like that Higgins takes such care of him. I like how Thomas needs him without ever daring to admit it.
Tell me more about how they became friends. Tell me more about Thomas in the jungle, when he was a POW (or wasn't he), what he did right after he shipped home.
Tell me more about Magnum's coping strategies now. A casefic is fine. Hanging out on the beach avoiding speaking to people is fine. Draw me a slice of life on a normal day, actually doing the job he's paid for.
Tell me more about Robin Masters, how he made his money, where he lives, who he is. Is he Higgins' actual lover? (I like that.) What has happened to make Higgins so protective of him? If he *IS* Higgins, is he another personality?
These are just suggestions - whatever you like I will enjoy!
James Asher Series
I like Simon. I also like James. I don't hate Lydia. Anything about Simon would be lovely (slash or het or gen is fine). (I am not really into James/Lydia. I would prefer not to receive a fic about them as a pairing or something porny about the two of them. Although another kind of fic where they are the pairing is absolutely fine. For a relationship-centric fic I would be into Simon/James, Simon/Lydia, or Simon/James/Lydia.)
I would like to know more about Simon, perhaps from a time where he is not interacting with James and Lydia? Inclusion of other vampires is optional but I would like it if it fits your story :D
These are merely suggestions: I'll enjoy anything you come up with :)
***
I like slash. There's no point in pretending :D but I also love gen, especially when it comes with a generous measure of hurt/comfort. Het done well is good too. But whatever you write, I'm going to absolutely love it.

I like slash. There's no point in pretending :D but I also love gen, especially when it comes with a generous measure of hurt/comfort. Het done well is good too. But whatever you write, I'm going to absolutely love it.
Or can pretend to? Because I just read the latest one (The Knowledge) and all I have to say is, it's fanfic. Or at least most of the plot is.

It interests me that when I am writing for one of my, if you were, peripheral fandoms, I can easily write 1000+ words in a sitting, I don't find I need to be in the mood, I don't find I need do more than, perhaps, peruse a chapter of two of canon or perhaps check a reference or quote (Wimseyfic in particular, I'll often check exact phrasings in canon).
Yet, although most days I write at least some Riptide, I will sit down to write and procrastinate; I will take two hours of writing time and write nothing until the last ten minutes; I will stare at the last sentence I wrote; I will agonise over plot.
(I rarely check Riptide canon while writing, I generally watch eps separately to writing. Perhaps I may know this canon rather well...)
It wasn't always thus, or perhaps I should say it isn't always thus, as I occasionally have bursts of exceptional output, like that one time I wrote a 12k fic in a single day (in about 18 hours, to be fair, and I was, I believe, laid up with a broken leg at the time. It was Sole Survivor for anyone interested) primarily, I think, because there was just no place I could stop and leave the boys in limbo...
I don't think it's a crafting thing, I mean, I don't think it's that I'm putting more effort in, exactly, as I always try to get voices/settings etc right, and I'm possibly pickier about Wimsey, Heyer, etc as the worlds are that much more different than this one. And in theory I should not need to strive to get my boys' voices right (or at least what I think is right) as I appear to have had a wee bit of practice.
Admittedly, I rarely have an outline, so "where to from here" is a thing, and sometimes I must wait for those ratbags to get out of bed and tell me what happened next (a curse, I assure you). But then I don't outline in my other fandoms either, and I rarely have much more idea when I begin, of where I'll end.
Who else finds differences between how they write in different fandoms?

Oooh! I just got an email from Amamzon which indicates to me I may have just received the new Peter Bowen. (pre-ordered. Kindle. You know the drill.) Montana Mysteries? Gabriel Du Pre? Does anyone else indulge?
Account created: 15 November 2009 - quite likely for Yuletide?
Total stories: 226
Total wordcount: 512624
Average (mean) wordcount: 2268.
Longest story: Flashpoint (Riptide, Nick/Cody, First time, Slash) at 25k. Double the length of my next-longest! One of my personal favourites :)
Shortest story: 97 words, Completion (Riptide, Nick/Cody, Slash) not counting a few fanarts/illustrated fics.
Total kudos: 2057
Kudos (mean) per story: 9, which seems pretty good since I write almost exclusively in tiny fandoms
Story with most kudos: Interlude (Lord Peter Wimsey X Miss Sayers Murder Mysteries, gen,, a Yuletide fic) at 113
Total comment threads: 193.
Comment threads per story: less comment-threads than fics which possibly says it all, ha :)
Story with most comments: The aforementioned : Interlude again
Total author subscriptions: 14.
Total story subscriptions: 3, not unsurprising as I rarely post anything "in progress", in fact I don't think I've ever posted an "in progress" to AO3
Story with most subscriptions: 3 stories with 1 sub each, and none of them were posted incomplete. I'm gonna assume they were trying to bookmark them or maybe subscribe to me?
Total bookmarks: 255
Story with most bookmarks: Interlude, of course, but also tied with War Torn, also Lord Peter, Peter/Bunter, Slash, slight AU, Yuletide again
Stories with no comments or kudos: Stories with no kudos: Inside Information (Riptide, Murray/Ted, Slash), and Computer Wizard, Riptide/Harry Potter whimsical cross supposing Murray is actually a wizard, Nick/Cody/Murray and Murray/Dumbledore.
Stories with no comments: lots of them, but mainly reposts which were "commented out" on LJ in the old days. Eclipse is one of the few recent fics which has received no comments (Riptide, Nick/Cody. Slash)

I *am* writing, I'm just *slow* right now! More coming xxx
I know this was a month ago that you posted this, but I'm still reading any Riptide I find at AO3, so more is always welcome.
