Buying & Selling Green

There are many ways businesses can be green through their buying or selling process.

Businesses that purchase green products such as recycled office supplies, biodegradable packaging, and environmentally friendly cleaning products reduce their ecological footprint.

Builders that build “green buildings” for residential or commercial use can have a significant positive impact on our environment. Likewise, manufacturers of products such as solar panels or energy efficient appliances aid others in being environmentally friendly.

Energy Efficiency

Energy efficiency is an integral part of the success of any business. Enhancements to energy systems and implementing sound energy management practices can improve comfort and productivity, as well as save energy and money. For example, a simple inexpensive surge protector power strip currently on the market pays for itself in energy savings in just a few weeks of use. In many businesses, computers run around the clock, with peripherals attached to them that continue to draw energy whether they are in use or not.  Using the sleep mode of the power strip automates a shut-down of energy consumed when not in use. Cost savings associated with the power usage of the computer system have exceeded 70 percent.

Transportation & Commute Trip Reduction

Telecommuting and off-site employees add profits to businesses bottom line since employees’ productivity is as much as 40 percent more productive (Gartner Group survey). Even one day a week of telecommuting has a significant impact on the environment. Along with the added productivity, commute trip reduction will play a key role in reducing pollution, climate change, energy consumption, and traffic congestion.

Waste Reduction & Recycling

Four smart reasons to prevent waste and recycle at work:

  1. It’s easy. Thurston Green Business partners provide free services to help you. We offer technical assistance, employee presentations, waste assessments, and promote your efforts.
  2. It can save you money by reducing your trash service
  3. It saves resources and is good for the environment
  4. Green business practices make you a hero to your customers and employees.

Water Conservation

Participation in the water conservation category is likely to result in an overall decrease in your business’ water bill over time or a stable bill as rates increase over time. You can also lower your energy bills by reducing the amount of water heated or cooled

The benefits of participation go beyond monetary rewards: water conservation on the part of residents and businesses in our communities ensures a clean, safe, and reliable water supply for everyone.
