ThingsLog data loggers standardly work with ThingsLog Cloud platform that takes care of device and data management.

Traditional water meters require either manual reading — expensive, infrequent, and dependent on physical access — or a separate pulse counter installed externally, adding hardware cost, a second battery to manage, and additional installation time. ThingsLog LoRa smart water meters integrate the metrological meter body and LoRa radio module in a single factory-built device. One battery powers both the meter’s registers and radio transmission for 10 years. MID (Measuring Instruments Directive) certification ensures legal metrological accuracy for billing purposes across all EU member states, eliminating the need for separate approval processes when deploying at scale.
A meter reader collects readings from all meters within radio range of a handheld LoRa receiver, walking or driving through the service area. Hourly or daily consumption data stored in the meter’s internal memory is downloaded in a single pass without requiring access to the meter pit or customer premises. This approach enables utilities to begin realising AMR benefits — elimination of estimated bills, reduction of reading labour — before committing to full fixed network infrastructure investment.
LoRa gateways installed across the service area continuously collect readings from all meters. Hourly consumption data transmitted to the ThingsLog platform enables early leak detection through consumption profile analysis — identifying continuous flow at night that indicates customer-side or network leaks. Billing based on actual measured consumption replaces estimated billing cycles. Customers gain access to a self-service portal showing their real-time consumption. Push alerts notify customers of unusual consumption patterns that may indicate an internal leak or tampering event.
ThingsLog LoRa smart water meters carry MID certification per EU Directive 2014/32/EU, making them legally approved for billing in all EU member states without additional national approval. Metrological accuracy class R250 (horizontal installation) and R80 (vertical installation) far exceeds the basic R100 class requirement — ensuring accurate billing even at very low flow rates corresponding to the minimum flow Qmin as low as 1/250 of the reference flow Q3. This high accuracy class is particularly important for residential billing where small leaks (dripping taps, running toilets) represent significant unbilled water volumes over time.
The meter continuously monitors flow rate even at very low rates down to the minimum flow Qmin. If flow is detected without any zero-flow period during a configured monitoring window — typically the 2:00-4:00 AM period when all household fixtures should be closed — the meter raises a leak alarm communicated via LoRa to the ThingsLog platform. This enables proactive notification to customers about potential internal leaks, often before the customer is aware of the problem. Early leak notification is a significant differentiator for customer service-focused utilities and reduces the customer bill impact of undetected internal leaks.
All meter readings, alarm events (leak, tamper, backflow, empty pipe), battery status, and metrological flags are transmitted to the ThingsLog platform and displayed in the smart water metering dashboard. The platform supports complete AMR workflows including route planning, reading validation, and exception management. Billing export integrates with major utility billing systems. DMA balance calculation aggregates zone inlet readings against the sum of customer meter readings to quantify apparent losses at district metered area level. Full API access enables integration with existing utility GIS, asset management, and CRM systems.
