Art & Disability
NIAD Art Center
NIAD is a progressive art studio for adult artists with developmental disabilities. We’re redefining contemporary art. Through its visual arts studio program, NIAD gives people with disabilities the skills and experience to express themselves, be independent and earn income as an artist. This nurturing community of artists fosters experimentation, increases competence to make informed choices and increases connections among diverse communities through the commonality of creative expression.
Creative Growth
Creative Growth is a non-profit organization based in Oakland, California that advances the inclusion of artists with developmental disabilities in contemporary art and strengthens community by providing a supportive studio environment and gallery representation.
Assistive Technology
Loaner Devices
- One way is through the California state-wide network of device loan centers. There are 13 “Device Loan and Demonstration Centers” across California, including CRIL in Hayward. The network database can be searched online by anyone!
- Go to https://www.myatprogram.org/DeviceLoan/Search. Make sure the “AT Program:” drop-down is set to “California”. Then type in a key word under “Search Parameters:” and see what comes up!
- State and federal grants pay for each Device Loan and Demonstration Center to mail the devices to you, so don’t be shy about letting them know your hopes for borrowing!
Voice Options
- The Voice Options Program offers eligible Californians who are unable to speak, or who have difficulty speaking, with a free speech-generating device. The goal of this program is to ensure full and equal telephone communications access for all Californians with disabilities.
