Radical Roots, Collective Futures: Forging Access for All

CIL’s 54th Anniversary Event

Saturday, March 14, 2026 · 5:00–9:00 PM PDT
Ed Roberts Campus · 3075 Adeline Street, Berkeley, CA 94703

Join the Center for Independent Living (CIL) for an inspiring evening celebrating community leadership, creativity, and collective impact at our 54th Anniversary Event.

Founded in 1972, CIL is the first Independent Living Center in the world and a cornerstone of the global disability rights movement. Rooted in the legacy of Ed Roberts and the Independent Living Movement, CIL advances disability justice through advocacy, direct services, community organizing, and leadership development — working toward a world where people with disabilities have the resources, rights, and opportunities to live independently and with dignity.

This special evening brings together community members, advocates, partners, and supporters to celebrate our shared history and collective future.

Special Performance

The evening will feature a powerful live performance by the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, an internationally acclaimed ensemble known for its uplifting sound, emotional depth, and message of unity.

Founded in 1986, the choir brings together singers from diverse faiths, cultures, and backgrounds to celebrate the rich traditions of Black gospel and spiritual music.

Their dynamic performances create an electrifying shared experience of joy, resilience, and community, values deeply aligned with CIL’s mission and the Independent Living Movement.Their presence promises to bring inspiration, celebration, and collective energy to this milestone event.

The Artichoke Award

At the heart of the evening is The Artichoke Award, a distinction historically presented by CIL to community leaders, cultural workers, and change-makers whose work reflects courage, authenticity, and care.

The award is inspired by a quote from Ed Roberts, who once described himself as: “An artichoke: a little prickly on the outside, with a big heart on the inside.”
