NotebookLM for Deep Research
Today’s post explores Google’s NotebookLM and shows how it can support deep research and study. I believe it can be used as an accommodation for students with disabilities for educational content.Â
Video Guide
Build your source material
To get started, log into NotebookLM, create a new notebook, and choose a topic before importing anything.
Then build the notebook by adding sources. You can upload your own documents and use the built-in web search to bring in more material. Use the fast research option for quick results or deep research for a broader scan.
Review what it finds and import only what you need, or import everything like we did.
As a research assistant, NotebookLM’s advantage is being source-grounded. This helps deliver more accurate answers and insights based on your actual material, reducing the likelihood of AI errors and hallucinations.
Chat with your source library
Once the sources load, you can ask questions and let NotebookLM pull answers from the library.
NotebookLM also suggests follow-up questions you can click to explore related areas.
Note that pulling in a large number of web sources can introduce conflicting guidance. You still need to verify and filter for relevance. Treat the notebook as a research accelerator, not a final authority.
Use Studio to generate study tools
Studio turns your source library into learning and planning resources. The demo shows options such as:
AI podcast
Video preview
Mind map
Flashcards
Quiz
Reports
Infographic
We tested out the mind map and flashcard features.Â
The map organizes the topic into clickable branches. You can click any node to push that topic into chat. NotebookLM then pulls details from your sources and expands on that specific area.
Our flashcards came from the same source set, and you can choose the number of cards and the difficulty level.
NotebookLM helps students
NotebookLM can support students with disabilities by turning course materials into flexible study aids like flashcards and mind maps, while also serving as a deep research tool that pulls answers and insights from a large, organized source library.
Note that it is built with robust security measures. Google does not access or use your content in NotebookLM for generative AI foundational model training unless you share feedback.
