Welcome to the Software Process and Measurement Cast’s final podcast.  Today we have a treat, a radio play titled, Navigating the Silos or Playing a Game with House Rules written by   David Herron and me. Over the years, Mr. Herron has been a boss, colleague, mentor, and most of all, a friend.

The story unfolds in the aftermath of the late 1990s tech boom. Innovatech, a pioneer in construction software, once rode the wave of innovation, disrupting the industry with its flagship product, Site Flow. However, as the digital landscape evolved, Innovatech found itself struggling to keep pace. Faced with increasing competition and stagnating growth, the company’s leadership embraced AI as a panacea.

The play is extracted from a business novella/case study that David and I wrote to help process and measurement consultants learn to generate process improvements in organizations.

Spirit – Enter Relationships

“There is no enjoying the possession of anything valuable unless one has someone to share it with.” Seneca

Stillness and relationships are intertwined.

Why it matters: Connections keep us grounded. Connections provide:

Spirit – Bath In Beauty

“In the woods, we return to reason and faith. There I feel that nothing can befall me in life— No disgrace, no calamity—which nature cannot repair.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Why it matters: Nature is calming because it reduces stress hormones, lowers blood pressure, and allows the brain to rest. A walk in nature fosters an effortless, gentle attention that engages the mind. Intense focus is not needed. The mind wanders and is restored.

Spirit – Beware Desire

“I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self.” — Aristotle

“A person enslaved to their urges is not free.” – Ryan Holiday

Spirit – Choose Virtue

The essence of greatness is the perception that virtue is enough.— Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Virtue is the highest good.

Why it matters: Moral and civic excellence, Stoic virtue, should underpin ALL of our actions [Go Deeper]. Emerson’s quote highlights his belief that greatness lies in relying on one’s own character and moral strength rather than external approval or conformity. I will again point out that Holiday is not describing holiness but principled behavior.

Part II: Spirit – The Domain Of The Soul

“On the surface of the ocean, there is stillness, but underneath, there are currents.”

Why it matters: The spirit or soul is the deep ocean whose currents can lie below a calm exterior. When they are out of sync, a ticking time bomb exists.

Thich Nhat Hanh

Mind – Find Confidence

“Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it.” Colin Powell

“Enter action with boldness.” Law 28 of Robert Greene’s 48 Laws of Power

Why it matters: Mental friction is a barrier to stillness. Confidence reduces mental friction. Holiday states:

Wisdom is more than knowledge and experience.

Why it matters: Wisdom is the ability to navigate life by correctly identifying what is good, what is bad, and what doesn’t matter.

  • Wisdom requires knowledge, experience, AND prudence.
  • It is a practical, not a theoretical skill.
  • It is a skill that you are always practicing to improve.

Section 1: The Mind – Empty the Mind

“That space between your ears—that’s yours. You don’t just have to control what gets in, you also have to control what goes on in there.” Ryan Holiday

Why it matters: What happens between our ears, except for pathological conditions, is within our control. This is the dichotomy of control described by Epictetus. The dichotomy is that there are things we can control and things we can’t. Emptying the mind is a function of recognizing that we own what we put in and then focusing.
