Should take the morning...

...and go for a long walk.

Friday, call doctor's office to renew prescription that regulates heart beat, and also has the happy effect of a feedback loop that reduces manifestations of stress. It's a twofer!

Yesterday morning, no prescription. Call doctor. O yes so sorry will call it in immediately. Yesterday evening no prescription.

This morning, call doctor; o yes, so sorry - patients waiting 3 hours, didn't get to it - will call now.

Five min later 'ping!' from pharmacy. No medicine. Back ordered.

Call pharmacy. When? Tomorrow.

RAGE1111!!!Kiiiiiilllllllll!!!RAGE111

Who's there, beside foul weather..?

Appropriate.

I went out to see McKellen's 'King Lear' last night in yet another driving storm advanced by a tropical depression. This is the second time I've seen it at a time of bad weather (H. Katrina) with a weak man in power (Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job!')

Initially, Lear is problematic. Is the respect that good men give him on account of his crown, or because he was a great king? Clearly he was not a good father (Neither is that jerk Gloucester.) Lear makes really stupid decisions: he divvies up the kingdom, Cordelia is disowned, resigns his authority. The remaining sisters collude, but when Lear goes to live with Goneril, his men behave like Drunken Frat Boys (Oh, yes, they did!) and one is not entirely unsympathetic with her wanting them out of the house. The degree of offense against Lear has to be taken as stated, but then McKellen has his scene with the fool, while packing a steamer trunk and being dressing to the 9's. McKellen's voice is like roughened timber, and we are easily persuaded to see Lear's point of view.

Reagan turns out to be as bad a lot as Goneril. Lear, deprived of dignity and proclaiming himself homeless, curses them all and stomps off into the night. [As he becomes one of them, the plight of the poor and homeless in the modern is evoked. There is much giving of coats.]

The storm grows; Lear loses his mind, but not his friends, in fact, he makes a new one. In the meantime, France takes advantage of the political turmoil to invade (or maybe this is a rescue party?). Gloucester is betrayed by his bastard son Edmund and blinded. I am rapt in my seat as collusion and conspiracy play themselves out. I know this won't end well, but I'm agog to see what happens next.

The Duke of Albany is conflicted, but principled; he fights the invading army; Lear fights with the Resistance. Lear and Cordelia are captured; Edmund makes his bid for the top spot; Goneril poisons Reagan; Reagan stabs Goneril; Edgar kills Edmund. Lear staggers in with Cordelia's body. The stage is littered with bodies. Albany says,

“The weight of this sad time we must obey,
Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say.
The oldest hath borne most: we that are young
Shall never see so much, nor live so long.”

There is no happy ending but one accepts that as inevitable as is the fact that it is still pouring rain when I leave the theater and Trump is still King.

Notes:

Sinead Cusack plays Kent.

This is a 'modernish' production. Lots of uniforms. Lear in 40s mufti, the daughters in '60s good taste' (this changes as their characters are revealed, becoming flat-out up-to-date military battle dress in Cordelia's case).

I liked that Lear's madness in the storm could be attributed to hypothermia and the dehydration to which older people are susceptible. Rest and IV fluids and he is on his feet, ready to accept defeat.

Shakespeare fans are nothing if not committed and the theater gave everyone rain-checks for turning out like champs. (A stranger gave me hers! Yay! Two free movies!)

Half my wishes granted...

The temperature is down in the low 60s (F) at last, but it's raining again!!! :(

Happy Autumn!
