Interviews

I’ve had the privilege of chatting with so many people I admire on their podcasts. Here are a few of my favourites.

SPDY Stream – Henri Helvetica is one of my favourite web performance people. I was delighted to join him on his stream to talk about the past, present, and future of our industry.

Brave UX – Brandon Jarvis’s long-running podcast is hands-down the best UX podcast out there. I was so honoured to be invited as a guest (for episode 156!) to talk about why web performance is a fundamental UX issue, how slow websites affect user perceptions and business outcomes, and why designers need to take ownership of performance alongside developers.

Fourcast – Talking with Jason Grigsby is always such a pleasure. This time, we talked about Google’s Core Web Vitals and the recent addition of Interaction to Next Paint (INP) as the new Vitals responsiveness metric. We covered a LOT of ground in a relatively short period of time, including:

  • What are Core Web Vitals, and why should site owners care about them?
  • What was FID and why is INP replacing it?
  • What are the ramifications for websites?
  • Are there many sites that passed FID that don’t pass INP?
  • Some UX implications of INP that too many people may be overlooking

SMC Journal – Scott Moore and I talked about web performance budgets – what they are, why you should ALWAYS be using them, tips and best practices, and how to get started.

Catching Up With Web Performance – I had SO MUCH fun talking with Tanner Hodges. He asked me to share my (loooong) career journey from publishing to UX to web performance. We also talked about the challenges of modern web performance and my passion for the psychology and neuroscience behind how we use the web.

Planet Performance – During a break at performance.now(), Stoyan Stefanov and I (pictured above) chatted about the conference, SpeedCurve (where I’ve served as CXO since 2017), how to focus on the right performance and UX metrics, remote work, and more. Stoyan commented that he was surprised at “actually how much we covered during the limited time we had”, but he’s probably never met anyone who talks as fast as I do. 😉
