Southwest has a long tradition of community activism and civic engagement so if you’re looking to contribute to your neighborhood, you’ve picked the right place!

Who we are and what we do

Founded in 1964, SWNA (EIN: 52-6056296) is a volunteer driven civic non profit organization for near Southwest Washington, DC (zip code 20024). We also coordinate with the residents and organizations that populate the Navy Yard.

Governed by by-laws and an elected board, our mission is to focus on building a better, more engaged community and to improve the quality of life for our 16,000 plus residents.

SWNA consists of The Southwester, a monthly news publication, monthly community meetings, a robust scholarship program, a welcome table at the Farmer’s Market, and issue focused task forces (Digital Empowerment, Education & Scholarship, Emergency Preparedness, SW Heritage (History), Technology, and SWNA Youth Activities). We also manage funds for the Landsburg Community Garden, Books for Kids and Friends of the SW Library.

SWNA Task Forces

The Assembly supports multiple task forces that are designed to improve the quality of life for Southwest DC residents.

SWNA at Work for Southwest DC

Founded in 1964, the Southwest Neighborhood Assembly (SWNA) is the local civic organization in Near Southwest Washington, DC (zip code 20024). Governed by by-laws and an elected board, its mission is to improve the quality of life for its more than 16,000 residents.

The SWNA consists of The Southwester, a monthly news publications, community meetings, a robust scholarship program and issue focused task forces (Education & Scholarship, Emergency Preparedness, SW Heritage (History), Technology, SWNA Youth Activities, and Digital Empowerment. Task Force Chairpersons are appointed by and serve at the pleasure of its members with board approval.
