Superfish Inc. VisualDiscovery is a Windows application developed by Superfish to provide visual shopping recommendations by overlaying ads and product offers on websites as users browse. It analyzes page content and images to present deals and similar products from affiliated retailers. VisualDiscovery was preinstalled on certain Lenovo consumer laptops sold in 2014–2015.
The software injected advertising into web traffic and, in earlier versions, installed a local proxy along with a Superfish root certificate. This setup enabled the interception and modification of both HTTP and HTTPS pages, which drew widespread criticism for weakening encrypted browsing and creating a potential vector for man-in-the-middle attacks. In response to these security and privacy concerns, distribution was halted, and tools and updates were released to remove the software and its certificate.
Platform: Microsoft Windows. Status: Discontinued. Recommendation: If VisualDiscovery is still present on a device, uninstall it, remove the associated root certificate, and run an up-to-date security scan.
