If this eclectic developer sounds new to you, let me shake your memory with a name: Among Us Arena, the viral fan-fighting game that got seriously popular a couple of years ago. I'll admit it: a 2D Soulcalibur-like game with anime fighter elements wasn't in my 2026 bingo card. It wouldn't have been in my 2025 bingo card too, nor in my 2027 bingo card. In fact, I wasn't expecting anything like that at all, especially not after the gigantic indie roundup in February. Chance wanted however, that Starkheim Tournament just released, bringing an indie spirit to a tale of swords and souls as old as history... but with bursts and special cancels!

Now, in this absolute trainwreck of a year 2026, I have come to announce that we, indeed, have not only a sequel to HYPERFIGHT, but that it has functional rollback netcode too and a playable free demo to boot. Deep Doujin Dive – KenGeki Cross Zone

Picture this situation: you play a game out of boredom, one you picked up despite it not looking like your thing at all. You quickly run into technical problems, general lack of polish and quite a plethora of bugs and you're tempted to just let it go... until you realize that the game includes and develops ideas that you haven't often around, if at all—and does it in a way that blows your mind. That was my experience with KenGeki Cross Zone (剣撃クロスゾーン), a Japanese indie fighter that sits so far outside of my usual comfort zone that I wasn't even sure whether I could review it objectively. Still, I'm glad I did: there's a certain joy in finding a rough, flawed game that has a strong identity nevertheless and this is one such case.

Brooklyn Games & Arcade closing in early 2026

Brooklyn Games & Arcade announced it will be closing for good between March and April 2026. The beloved arcade has played host to retro fighting game tournaments for over 10 years with footage on YouTube available from as far back as 2017. Tournaments and events will continue to run until its closure, which you can learn more about on their Twitter page. I encourage our readers to check our their awesome selection of cabinets while you still can at 6120 4th Av in Brooklyn, New York.

Brooklyn Video Games, the parent location and a separate independently run video game store, has not announced plans for closure.

There are times where you pick up a game and you can't really understand whether you like it or not, but, despite that, you keep coming back to it, to try it out and experience what it has to offer. The game might be quite rough around the edges and have more than a few problems, yet you can't really put it down. You want to dissect why you like it and why you don't like it, almost to a clinical level. For me, The Skeletons Are Fighting (out on Steam now), from the same developers as Genki Break, is one such game.
