Subtle is an association that brings together professional audiovisual translators from around the world. Founded in the UK in 2006 by freelance subtitlers, Subtle seeks to represent and protect the interests of everyday professionals working in all fields of audiovisual translation, including subtitling, captioning, transcription, dubbing, audio description and more. Today, Subtle is a multinational community that includes not just self-employed professionals but also students and academics.

Subtle is also a co-founder and active member of AudioVisual Translators Europe (AVTE), the European federation of national associations and organizations for media translators. Through collaboration with various industry stakeholders, along with our European partner organisations, we help to establish protections for freelancers as we strive to make audiovisual translation a sustainable and recognised profession across the globe.
