IC Information:
Character Name: Golbez (last name Harvey for Mayfield purposes)
Character Series: Final Fantasy IV: The After Years
Character Age: 47
Residence: 1651 Albright Lane
He comes from the latter half of the Crystals chapter of The After Years, shortly after entering the Depths.
Personality: Once upon a time, there was a villain named Golbez who was evil, cruel, and manipulative, caring not for the legions of innocents he slaughtered to pave the way to the moon. Or at least, that's what everyone thought. In reality he was being controlled by a being called Zemus who had the ability to manipulate and amplify negative emotions. Zemus had latched on to Golbez's feelings of hatred and used them to control him. Once freed from Zemus's control, Golbez was filled with remorse and shame for the things he had done, and he spent the next seventeen years asleep, hiding from the world.
Now that his mind is his own, Golbez bears little resemblance to the evil, overdramatic, hammy person he once was. He's a man of few words, speaking only when necessary. Part of this is because he sees little need for small talk, but another part of it is because, thanks to his past, his "people skills" leave much to be desired. He doesn't know how to interact with people beyond what's absolutely necessary, and he prefers to be left alone much of the time. Despite this, he cares very deeply for the people closest to him and would do anything in his power to protect them. He's a good person, just not very good at showing it.
Golbez feels immense guilt for the actions he committed in the past. Even if it technically wasn't his fault, he still blames himself for not being strong enough to resist Zemus's manipulation. Because of this, he's determined to do whatever it takes to make up for what he has done. At first, he was hesitant to introduce himself to people as "Golbez", feeling ashamed of the name (as it was given to him by Zemus). Now, though, he embraces it, as to deny it would be to deny his past and his sins. Not that he'll go around telling everyone in a transdimensional jamjar that he's a mass murderer or anything, but if someone from his world points it out, he'll acknowledge it.
In terms of intelligence, Golbez is a rather smart character. He has access to every offensive Black Magic spell in the game, implying a great deal of time spent studying. He's also good at making quick decisions and good at planning. Also, although he won't have any of the events from Dissidia Final Fantasy in his history, said game implies that even without Zemus's influence he's good at manipulating people to get the results he wants. At this point in his life, however, he wouldn't want to resort to that sort of thing unless it were absolutely necessary.
Thanks to his guilt complex, at times it seems as though Golbez has somewhat of a death wish. It's actually entirely possible for him to be killed off for real over the course of the game; if this happens, is perfectly happy with the outcome, seeming as though he had planned it all along. For the purposes of Mayfield, though, he survives this event and decides that he needs to keep on living so that he can continue atoning for his sins.
Abilities: Golbez is an accomplished Black Mage, able to use every offensive spell in the game, but none of the status-inducing spells like Break or Sleep. He can also inflict Paralysis with the ability Pressure and draw enemy attacks with Taunt.
Like everyone else in The After Years, Golbez has access to the Band system, which allows him to combine his abilities with those of another person to produce a new attack -- for example, combining his Black Magic with Cecil's White Magic yields a powerful spell called Ultima Spark. In most cases, Bands can only be used by two or more people who have a strong bond or connection; in Golbez's case, he can only perform Bands with Cecil, Kain, Fusoya, and Ceodore.
