Situated in the heart of Toronto’s Discovery District and at the head of hospital row, the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus is the University of Toronto’s premier space for creating new companies, jobs and solutions to the world’s biggest challenges. Schwartz Reisman West, the west tower of the complex, is now open—and Schwartz Reisman East will follow in the development’s next phase. Once complete, the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus will house the country’s largest concentration of student- and faculty-led startups, harnessing the university’s research-driven entrepreneurial spirit for the benefit of Canada and the world.

The Bioweapons Lab Hidden in Siberia

Did you know… the Soviet Union ran one of the world’s deadliest bioweapons labs in Siberia?
At Vector Institute, scientists developed anthrax, smallpox, and plague as weapons during the Cold War.
Workers were exposed to live pathogens during experiments, sometimes resulting in sickness or death.
The lab’s secrecy was so intense that even local residents weren’t aware of the danger.
Some of the most advanced viral research in the world was simultaneously a major public health risk.
Science became a weapon — and the humans inside were part of the experiment.

Today the students from Archbishop Denis O’Connor had an incredible opportunity to visit the University of Toronto AIMM Lab, where they connected with Jude Kong whose work uses mathematics to model real-world challenges such as infectious diseases and global health.

Students also visited the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, a world-renowned centre dedicated to advancing research, collaboration, and education in mathematics.

Another highlight of the day was touring the Vector Institute for Artificial intelligence where students learned about the future of artificial intelligence and how it is transforming industries and improving lives. Vector’s mission is to drive excellence and leadership in Canada’s AI research, innovation, and application to support economic growth and improve the lives of Canadians.

During the visit, students had the privilege of learning from an amazing group of researchers and presenters. Vector’s mission is to drive excellence and leadership in Canada’s knowledge, creation, and use of artificial intelligence to foster economic growth and improve the lives of Canadians.

These researchers shared insights into how artificial intelligence is being applied in fields such as healthcare, research, and technology.

A special thank you to Sherif, who served as our liaison and helped coordinate this meaningful experience for our students.

Opportunities like this allow young minds to see firsthand how mathematics, science, and artificial intelligence are shaping the future.
