Installation

The easiest way to install Independent Analytics is by visiting your Plugins > Add New menu. Search for “Independent Analytics” and install the first result you see there.

To install with the zip file downloaded from this page:

Login to your WordPress dashboard
Visit the Plugins > Add New menu
Click the Upload Plugin button at the top
In the upload form that appears, click the Choose file button and select the independent-analytics.zip file you downloaded here
Click the Install Now button
Once the page reloads, click the blue Activate link

FAQ

How do I install it?: Download it from this page and upload via the Plugins > Add New menu of your website. Alternatively, visit your Plugins > Add New menu and search for “Independent Analytics” by name.
Does it use Google Analytics?: No, Independent Analytics is an alternative to Google Analytics. You do not need a Google account to use it.
Can I use Independent Analytics and Google Analytics at the same time?: Yes, you can run them both simultaneously without any issues or errors.
Can I import data from Google Analytics or Jetpack Stats?: No, it is not possible to import stats from other analytics tools at this time.
Will it slow down my site?: No, the tracking script makes a deferred request to your site’s REST API to record the visit. This has no impact on the loading experience, and does not impact your Core Web Vitals, allowing you to achieve a perfect 100/100 Page Speed Insights score.
Does tracking start right away?: Yes, the moment you install Independent Analytics it will start tracking views. If you don’t see any views right away, clear your site’s cache and then visit your site in a private browser tab to record your first view.
Do I need to use a cookie popup with it?: No, Independent Analytics does not use cookies.
How much space does it take in my database?: Independent Analytics will store roughly 200-300MB per million sessions. We find this amount of data to be reasonable for the vast majority of websites. There is also an option to automatically delete old data, so you can store only the last 1-5 years of analytics.
Are bot visits counted?: Independent Analytics ignores all self-identifying bots, such as search engine crawlers and uptime checkers. If you are getting visits from malicious bots that disguise themselves as human visitors, we recommend using Cloudflare or the Shield Security plugin to block these bots from accessing your website.
Is there a tracking code?: Yes, but you don’t have to add it yourself. It gets included on all of your site’s pages automatically once Independent Analytics is activated.
Does it work with multisite installs?: Yes, Independent Analytics works well with multisite installs. Each sub-site will get its own Analytics menu with its own stats.
What metrics does it track?: The primary metrics it tracks are views, visitors, sessions, session duration, bounce rate, and average session duration.
Does it work if I use Matomo?: Yes, Independent Analytics will run smoothly and won’t create any errors even if you’re already using Matomo or any other analytics plugin.

I’ve tried many visitor analytics plugins, some free, some paid, but they either didn’t count the visits correctly, or slowed my website way down. I’ve been using the pro version of IA for only about a month and there is much more to learn but so far, it’s very good. It has quite an accurate accounting of visitors and does not slow my website at all. It’s not one that you activate then don’t do more, it’s one that has many features to learn about and use.

I recently recommended this plug-in to a client as an alternative to my company setting them up with the full Google Analytics – which honestly, Google analytics is always so overwhelming for clients they never use it. Your Independent Analytics plug-in is exactly what they needed and they even purchased the Pro version right away to be able to receive weekly reports for their board members. It’s super easy to setup, but just a heads-up to developers, if you want the reports to be emailed to your client you must use a “From” email that contains your clients matching domain name, meaning you can’t use your clients gmail email as the “From” address for the reports. Independent Analytics also recommends a 3rd party plug-in if you’re having email delivery problems from a hosting company – use: (WP Mail SMTP).

So far, pretty good analytics and data, but I feel like the performance(server) impact is a little much. If that gets changed, so will my review to 5 stars

It’s a very solid analytics plugin and a great choice when you want to keep your visitors data to yourself. Is it perfect? No.There are a few features missing in the PRO version, IMO.1. There’s no screen movement video recording available. That’s a very interesting feature to potentially find out where your visitors/customers are struggling. 2. Click tracking can’t be used with custom URL patterns. I now see that the latest update added classes and IDs to custom pattern which is a big step in the right direction.3. If you use one of the major form builders (Gravity Forms) to create order forms with online payment there’s no way to track and record the total $ amount of submitted orders.But again, it’s probably still the best WP analytics plugin out there at the moment, considering privacy and conformity with privacy protection laws, and overall features.

Update, amending my rating as every time I update the Pro plugin (on all of my websites) I get an “Update failed” error. This needs to be fixed. I haven’t even used it all yet, but loving it so far! Easy to setup, love the email tutorials. Even though I think they should slow it down a bit, I think they are very useful.
