The cost is $40 each, plus a plate swapping charge. Depending on timing, your regular registration fee might also apply. For all Massachusetts license plates there is a renewal fee every two years.
The first time the plate is ordered, the Museums get $28 and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (Mass DOT) gets $12. Each time those plates are renewed, the Museums get the entire $40.
Customers will receive a letter in the mail from the Registry of Motor Vehicles with instructions on how to receive their new plates. The customer will have 90 days from receiving the letter to call the Registry of Motor Vehicles, Special Plates Department for their plate. Customers can recycle their old license plates. Customers who have vehicles registered will pay a registration swap fee and special plate fee. New vehicles will pay the registration fee and special plate fee.
