About the challenge

Who doesn't love a delightful surprise? Come join SPARKS to create a product that encourages and celebrates the beauty of spontaneous moments! SPARKS includes a series of workshops, speaker events, and presentations hosted over Zoom and in person.

SPARKS is a designathon centered around the creation of an experience that adds value to people's lives by sparking delightful, unexpected moments of joy. Participants in teams of up to 4 will be challenged to create a prototype that promotes joyful spontaneity in the span of 3 days.

SPARKS is an inclusive event that welcomes all individuals, regardless of their level of experience or background. Whether you are just starting out in design, you are an experienced designer, or simply someone with an interest in product creation, SPARKS has something for you.

Requirements

What to Build

Think about an issue that you think could be solved or improved with joyful spontaneity. BeReal, for example, helps users be more authentic on social media by introducing spontaneity, and apps like Meetup help users find like-minded individuals to embark on spontaneous adventures together. Once you identify the issue you want to solve, do some research to understand the stakeholders involved, and think about how people around the world are affected by this issue. This can be a specific issue of concern that exists for a certain group, or a general trend that you think is problematic pervading our society. Then, design a product prototype that might solve or improve the problem!

What to Submit

Participants should submit a 1-2 minute demo video walking through their design, the choices they made, and the ways in which their design contributes towards solving the issue they chose.
