Please note: Although we have listed data collected from the installation, this project’s purpose was an art installation, not a data collection installation. This data is not an accurate representation of Cal Poly’s attitude on campus safety.
In order to collect participant’s data, each colored thumbprint represents a different demographic. The colors are represented as such: Red: 1st year, Orange: 2nd year, Yellow: 3rd year, Green: 4th year, Blue: 5th year and above, Purple: Non-Cal Poly, and Pink: Faculty. This method of participation provided a colorful response to a depressing topic.![]()
From this installation, we discovered that generally the younger participants felt the safest on campus. On the contrary, faculty and 5th years plus showed “slightly unsafe” results.
Quotes from Participants
“It hurt to see the increase in mass shootings, but it felt good to know that most people at Cal Poly feel that creating a safe environment is important.”
“I was shocked by the number of shootings. What really surprised me was how the shootings have increased throughout the years. I think the installation was pretty successful at spreading awareness to Cal Poly and the community.”
“I never really took the time to stop and think about Cal Poly’s safety. You see shootings on the news, but never think it would happen on your campus. It was really eye-opening.”
