Eligibility Requirements

Expectations

  • Track and take notes on Department of State legislation, perform research, and attend hearings at Legislative Hall. Note: This expectation does not apply to the Summer and Fall sessions.
  • Monitor news outlets, develop content for social media platforms, assist with website edits, and attend community and outreach events.
  • Provide general administrative support, including answering constituent inquiries.
  • Learn about the various divisions at the Department of State, assist Directors with tasks, and attend tours of facilities throughout the State.
  • Schedule between 15-20 hours per week.

Frequently Asked Questions

At this time, up to two interns are onboarded for the Delaware Department of State Internship Program each term.

Interns are fully immersed in the day-to-day operations at the Department of State. Intern responsibilities and tasks will vary given the fast-paced nature of state-government.

Interns can work a maximum of 29.5 hours per week. Hours are flexible and dependent on each individual candidate’s schedule. Interns must work at least 12 hours per week.

Interns are expected to dress Business Casual throughout the week.

At this time, the Department of State Internship Program is only hosted in-person at the Dover office. However, Interns may be asked to attend events in New Castle County, Kent County, and Sussex County.

The DOS internship team is unable to consider applications that are incomplete.

A letter of recommendation written by anyone who can speak to the applicant’s qualifications, character, and commitment to their work.

A one-page resume including education, work experience, and volunteer experience.

A cover letter addressed to the DOS Internship Coordinators indicating an applicant’s interest in the program.

A 500-word writing sample. Applicant’s may submit any writing sample that demonstrates their writing styles and ability.

Yes. Interns are classified as part-time casual/seasonal employees with the State of Delaware.

Interns are limited to participating in only one session of the DOS Internship Program.

Yes. Candidates may reapply for a different term.
