Founders Story
So Perth began with a simple observation: Perth deserved better local media.
Back in 2011, one afternoon the city’s train network came to a standstill. Thousands of people were stranded, Transperth’s phone lines were overwhelmed, and the major news outlets were busy covering celebrity headlines instead of what people in Perth actually needed to know. Searching Twitter revealed dozens of real-time updates from commuters on the ground, but there was no easy way to find them. This is when founder Adam Barrell went home that night and built one.
That project became Tweet Perth, a platform that aggregated local conversations before location-based search even existed on Twitter. What started as a real-time website tool quickly evolved into something much bigger. By partnering with passionate local writers across food, events, family, sport and lifestyle, Tweet Perth became one of Perth’s first digital news and lifestyle publications and grew into the city’s largest and most influential Twitter community.
When changes to Twitter’s platform made it clear the future of the Tweet Perth brand couldn’t depend on a single social network, the business evolved into So Perth. The mission, however, never changed: celebrate everything that makes Perth special, champion local businesses, and help people easily discover more of the city they call home.
Today, So Perth reaches millions of people each month across web, social, email and video, but our purpose remains the same as it was on day one — to make every Perth day a little better.
